Mass. Town Uses Goats To Clear Meadow, Save A Buck

Author: The Associated Press Source: Tampa Bay Online

Title: MASS. TOWN USES GOATS TO CLEAR MEADOW, SAVE A BUCK
A Boston suburb has some new landscapers that will work for food — a half-dozen goats clearing and maintaining an overgrown public meadow.
Under a pilot program in Andover, Lucy McKain's dairy goats will rotate their grazing around the meadow for an all-you-can-eat buffet of grass, brush and other growth. The goats can clear as much as a half acre every three days at no cost.

They did this in my hometown of Livermore, CA. A whole bunch of goats were hired to eat all the undergrowth in a riparian area. It was really neat. They were friendly.

for a lawnmower, pick the goat.
Sheep can (and will) eat the grass down to the roots, whereas goats will merely trim (since it is, as was said, pretty low on their favorite food choices) .
Not to mention, goats can defend themselves much better than sheep.
Public Service of NH (electric utility) uses sheep and goats to clear power lines as it is more cost effective to rent the space for grazing than hiring people to cut it with chainsaws and brush cutters.

I like this story! I raise goats and completely enjoy their personalities.
contrary to what a lot of people think, goat milk is not nasty. It tastes good and is much better for you than cow milk. The flavor of milk can be affected by whatever plant material they eat but so can cow milk.
Goats do not eat garbage. They prefer broad leaf vegetation and actually would not make good lawn mowers as narrow bladed grass is near the bottom of their preferred food. Sheep would be better for keeping a lawn mowed. I haven't personally tried to give my goats tin cans, but the cartoon image of a goat eating a can is just as false as the green skinned witch with warts on her face.

So intelligent, and hilarious. They can make unnerving, quasi-humans sounds, too. I don't know about their milk, though. I'm vegan, so it's a non-starter under any context, but if I wasn't I'd still have to pass . . . garbage in, garbage out, you know. Leave it for the baby goats, I say. But it's not half as bad as crab 'meat.' They eat the dead, you know. Nasty.

They are extremely cute. And very smart, affectionate and make great pets. As well as all of the other things mentioned here. Good choice!

Goats might not be the cutest of critters, but you have to hand it to them that they do a heck of a job clearing up overgrown grass and shrubs, since that is what they like most to eat. And I agree that they are a lot more eco-friendly AND quieter than lawn mowers. And the Nannies give good milk that sensitive people can drink!
Love to all

I'll take an occasional "Maaaaaaaa!" now and then over the dreadful ear shattering sound of power mowers.
We here in Massachusetts seem to be getting back to our olde fangled ways. We have a lot of CSA farming going on here ( small, sustainable) and there's a growing enthusiasm for local, organic food and a high demand for the handiwork of local artisans. I sure like it a lot. Neuter the Corporate Dog, I say!
