Along Maryland Route 5, Wiccans Work Their Magic

Author: Dan Morse Source: Washington Post

Title: ALONG MARYLAND ROUTE 5, WICCANS WORK THEIR MAGIC
The three hold different jobs: Amber Russell designs bouquets; Anne Rutherford is a legal secretary; Bonnie Smith works for a landscaper.
But the three Southern Marylanders have this much in common: Each considers herself a witch.
They practice a religion called Wicca, one they say is growing in the area, and one that surfaced -- tangentially, at least -- in a St. Mary's County campaign for the Maryland General Assembly. Just before last month's primary election, House of Delegates candidate Clare Calvert Whitbeck issued a statement denying she was a Wiccan, saying she did so to put a false rumor to rest.
But five Wiccans in all three Southern Maryland counties stressed in interviews that there is nothing to fear from their beliefs. And on that score they have backing from a trio of scholars who studied the broader world of what is known as neopaganism.

LD Wolverine (Edmonton, Ontario) - Email Me

I can understand why a politician would wish to distance herself from being called anything other then what she is. The fact she was called a Wiccan is really, in my eyes, no worse or better then someone saying she was Jewish, or Muslim, or whatever. If she isn’t, then she isn’t...simple right? But no, see this article does not convey the manner in which she did the rebuttal. Did she do it fundamentally? Did she raise her fist and pump it in the air and cry out to the masses "I AM NOT A WITCH!!" (Shadows of the elephant man shouting I AM NOT AN ANIMAL! Come to mind) LOL. Who is to know?
I guess its all semantics.
I take issue with one statement in this article though.
"Witches and Neo-Pagans usually differentiate themselves quite forcefully from Satanists."
I don’t know about that statement. I think if we differentiate ourselves forcefully then we are no better then Christians, painting with one brush that, which should be a bright palate, rich with different beliefs and thoughts.
No, Wiccans are not Satanists. The same as we are not Christians, Muslims, or Atheists. I say it not "forcefully" but simply.
Sorry, at the risk of irritating many witches here, any witch who balks and has a disdainful look on his/her face when saying "Goodness, I'm NOT a SATANIST!!" really should take a step back and look at the attitude they are expressing. Look familiar? It should. It’s the same look the fundies give us when they want to berate us.
Peace friends. Linda
