Update: Police Say Ritual May Be Linked To Skull Found In Cauldron

Author: AP Source: NBC 4 News

Title: POLICE: RITUAL MAY BE LINKED TO SKULL FOUND IN CAULDRON
A cauldron found last week with a human skull and some bones inside may be part of a Palo ritual, an African religion rarely practiced in the United States, state police said.
Police said they were contacted by Jennifer Rose Emick, an expert in alternative religions, who told them the items were similar to those used in initiation ceremony by practitioners of the Palo Mayombe, a religion originally from the Congo region of Africa and brought to the Americas by enslaved men and women.

Well, at least they pinpointed a distinct possibility that doesn't smack of paranoid sensationalism. I'm glad they contacted someone about it rather than merely say it was "Satanic".

i wonder what kind of cauldron it was. iron cauldrons, even small ones, are pretty expensive, at least from what i see in the occult stores in these parts. maybe they're overpriced, but i don't think so. it would seem a waste to leave a perfectly good iron cauldron someplace instead of bringing it back. i guess if its big it could be heavy lugging it around though.
i bet it was a plastic cauldron, with one of those fans underneath that fans the orange and yellow plastic strips to look like fire. those are cheap. they don't have the same ambience as iron and real fire, but if you're dancing around in the dark, you really can't tell the difference, esp. if you're a little buzzed. that's probably it.

We are from Florida and the Palo religion is fairly common - especially any where near Miami. Their ceremonies are quite moving - have only seen the ones that allow non-initiates though. Honoring the ancesters relics is very important to them.

By the letter fo the law, if this expert is correct, this is indeed a "Pagan" ritual. Unless of course you are one of those people who insist that you alone define what is truly Pagan or not. So yes, this appears to have been a Pagan ritual, bones, creepy props and all. Of course, the term Pagan has become almost meaningless due to the vast influx of... hrm... rabble.
Today the only meaning "Pagan" has left is NOT one of the big, mainstream faiths. Of course, that is like trying to define a cat just by saying it isn't a dog. Far too often, Wiccans, Pagans, and Heathens try to define themselves simply by saying what they aren't. Sorry. It doesn't work that way. You have to stand for something yourself to be worthy of definition.

This really WOULD be a pagan ritual. "Pagan" encompasses a wide range of beliefs and practices.

At least the overtrained Keystone Kops stopped blaming "a Pagan ritual."
