Wicca Teacher Claims 1 Mega Ticket

Author: Todd Hallidy, AP   Source: MSNBC

Title: WICCA TEACHER CLAIMS 1 MEGA TICKET

Elwood "Bunky" Bartlett says a New Age book store made it possible for him to become an overnight multimillionaire.

He and his wife, Denise, were on their way to the shop where he occasionally teaches Wicca and Reiki (RAY'kee) healing when they stopped at a liquor store and bought two $5 Mega Millions tickets for Friday night's estimated $330 million jackpot. On Sunday, he said one ticket was a winner.

"If it wasn't for this place I wouldn't have won the lottery," Bartlett said Sunday at Mystickal Voyage, the New Age shop.

You Want To Know The Secret? Sep 4th. at 8:53:07 pm EDT

AnnieBW (Laurel, Maryland) - Email Me

If you want to win the lottery, you have to play it. I don't play the lottery, but I certainly will now! As for any special spells or anything like that, I do know that all Bunky and his wife did was duck into a store and buy a $5 ticket on the night that the drawing was held. No special numbers or anything like that. Pure chance. Just an off-the-cuff purchase, like so many other people make when the lottery gets big.

Whatever the Gods have planned for the Bartletts, I wish them all the best. I've known them for about 13 years now, and am very proud that this happened to them.

Talk About Blessed Be! Sep 4th. at 9:46:11 am EDT

Lori Dake (Chicago, Illinois) - Email Me - Web

As the BoingBoing article stated ;) When I got the news, I was so absolutely elated, because one of US gets to win it big! What a true blessing!

I hope no one takes advantage of his good fortune - it never ceases to amaze me how "friends and family" come out of the woodwork when they smell money. I hear it's part of the Lottery Winners' Curse. I've heard the way to counter-act that is by means of charity, so I hope some of his winnings go to meaningful and worthwhile causes. Me personally, I'd be dropping these good people at Witchvox a chunk of my winnings, and also the Lady Liberty League, for the hard work they've done for the local, American and Global Pagan community. (And no, no one prodded me to endorse anyone LOL)

Anyway - I just wanted to express my excitement one of our own is REALLY going to be moving onward and upward! I trust that bookstore will be expanding to accomodate more people!

Take care,
Lori Dake

PS. oh and yeah - I could really use a leg up in getting a new job! We got a record label that needs continuous funding in its early stages! ;) I hope his Gods would still be in the giving mood to point me in the right direction :D

Tax Advice Sep 4th. at 4:18:52 am EDT

Ahr-Ohn (Bridgeport, Connecticut) - Email Me

First, establish your tax exempt organization, and see how much you can put there; it might be a 50% limit, unless you give it your ticket. Personally, you can now afford anything but Debt.

We have Powerball, in Connecticut, but I haven't discovered what's to happen, before I win. Something about promoting the Holy Grail without. Once I do win, I might just buy some Baja California Swamp Land, and build a school of WitchCraft and Wizardry.

Well, you're the accountant; help the poor with their taxes, that you can learn the wisdom of their conditions. You may and should profit from your teachings, as long as you don't allow the ranking of your students by materiality.

I doubt that fewer people than myself would like to help you spend all that, but 41 million only goes so far. Okay, you should open the Sky Glen Artist's Colony, with an eldercare facility, but don't run a loss at it. A good estate should be self sustaining, but not neglected. You've barely enough to buy yourself a minor god-hood, but only so long as you remember that such can't be bought.

I always found paganism to be full of gamblers and to that note it always does pay off, however in the wiccan design its not the fact you may or may not teach for free...

Its The fact that you care enough in the first place to try and put your own personal limits on teaching more freely as the goal to achieve..

As one teaching both in and out of the funds circle.. I was never one for money or gifts to myself..i was always trying to offer what i can to the good people i meet and if it meant my stuff...then so be it...

Now you bucky have a big task ahead of you and that is to see what happens when the funds aren't the only thing at your door.

Be well

Thank You Sep 3rd. at 10:16:37 pm EDT

Jaylin (Dundalk, Maryland) - Email Me

I just wanted to say thank you to all who have commented so far. I appreciate all the wonderful words. It has been a wonderful few days.

Thank you Wren for posting this.

I am very greatful to the Gods for their gift and I will hold to my bargin and teach what I can to those who wish to hear it and now I can teach for free.

I always felt bad about teaching and getting paid for it and now I don't have to worry about it. The Gods new I stressed over that issue and they fixed it for me. They also helped to push me in the right direction when I was trying to decide to grow my accounting practice or work on my spiritual practice.

It has been wonderful and thank you all again.

I have an interview with Good Morning American and the Today show on Wed. morning so be sure to look for me there.

I am doing some local radio shows tomorrow morning as well. We go to the Lottery commission tomorrow to make it all official.

Couldn't Have Happened To Better People. Sep 3rd. at 8:32:16 pm EDT

Rev. Amy Blackthorn, HPS, DD, Ph.D (Newark, Delaware) - Email Me

No need to go looking for the "exact invocation" and it wasn't exactly a deal.

The AP writer took liberties, as they often do.

I was sitting next to him when it happened, about two weeks ago, and he kept getting the message (thru an Oracle) to devote MUCH more time to his (Always Free) teaching people, and stop working so hard as an accountant. So he looked at the Ceiling and said, "but for that to happen, I'd have to win the lottery."

He hasn't set him self up for anything with this comment, because Bunky has TIRELESSLY devoted his time and energy to the Pagan community for TWENTY YEARS.

The thing that makes me sad, is all of the people coming out of the woodwork wanting a Hand Out.

These are very sweet, down to earth people, who just want to HELP OTHERS.

I think this is wonderful! I hope he uses this blessing wisely though (and keeps up his "end of the bargain") ! Winning the lotto seems to be a blessing and a curse to many! Though I'd like to give it a try! lol *winks*

Congrats to him and his family!!!!

This Is Great! Sep 3rd. at 12:24:56 pm EDT

Lady-hearted Mojo (Irving, Texas) - Email Me

I saw the story on CNN when it aired last night. I'm very happy for this gentleman and his wife. The best part of this is that he's a good representative for us. In the interview he was well-spoken, friendly, humorous, and as suprised and happy about the win as any average person would be. There was nothing "out-there" about him.
If I were him, though, I'd find a good financial manager to manage that $32 million, and disappear for a while because he's going to have every down-and-outer, everyone with a sick grandmother or child, and every schemer knocking on his door looking for a hand-out, NeoPagan or not.

What I Found Sep 3rd. at 11:38:47 am EDT

Stormshadow (El Paso, Minnesota) - Email Me

a bit irksome was the lead in to the story when I saw this on CNN this morning. They started off saying "big winners always bring the oddballs out". Was that statement truly necessary?? People win the lottery all the time and say thank God I won, and no one bats an eye, but of course if someone from an alternative path gives thanks to Gods or Goddesses "not of the norm", we're then classified as oddballs. Guess we still have a ways to go til full acceptance.
Congratulations are in order at any rate =)
Just 2 cents worth.
