Bush Angles For Conservation Stature

Author: Jennifer Loven, Associated Press Source: Boston Globe (MA)

Title: BUSH ANGLES FOR CONSERVATION STATURE
President Bush spent a crisp fall Saturday gingerly balancing a tiny screech owl on a gloved hand at a wildlife refuge and casting for rockfish on the Chesapeake Bay.
And for lunch? Famous Maryland style crabcakes, served up at Vice President Dick Cheney's waterside home outside this charming Eastern Shore village.
It was all part of an effort to burnish his conservation credentials while announcing new initiatives that he said would protect migrating birds and two fish species, red drum and striped bass, prized by anglers.
First came some bird-watching at the Patuxent Research Refuge outside Washington, where he peered through a scope at waterfowl and had a closer encounter with a brown-and-white screech owl.
"Cute little fellow," the president said, looking slightly askance at the jittery bird perched on his hand.

It makes me wonder when Pagans, who supposedly "think for themselves" stopped thinking for themselves. It's nice to know some of us, rare as they may be, do live in the real world.

You ever see a spotted owl? Probably not, unless you live out here in the Pacific NW. They may nest in old growth. They also nest in culverts under logging roads and in apple orchards. They do not feed in old growth - there is nothing there to feed on. Deer, elk bear, cougar, bobcats, coyotes don't feed in old growth - there is nothing there to feed on. Don't quote "scientific experts" to me, they have never been out of the office except on field excursions, looking to prove something they already decided was fact. Ask a real environmentalist - ask a logger who lives in the invironment.
Ever been to a wilderness area out here? Hundreds of thousands of acres with no roads? Pretty cool thought, until you find out that we can't access it, so what's the point? There are more trees now than ever before.
TR was citizen soldier, gave up politics for a little bit to lead troops into combat. GW was a citizen soldier - he flew jets over the Gulf when things were hot with the Soviets and Cuba. That he didn't see combat is more JFK's fault than his. Look up the facts, not the rantings of people who don't like him for whatever they think he represents. Me? I was a citizen soldier, went to the Sand in '03, saw buddies shot up, saw one die. I don't blame GW. I have seen the real world. Give thanks that you haven't, that you have the luxory of blinders and can make yourselves feel better by blaming GW. Whipping boys are important to some people.
Just because an internet petition says something, doesn't mean it is fact, either.

If you believe, for a second, that Shrub has grown a soul and conscious I have an old bridge to sell you in New York. Just this morning a friend sent me a petition to sign. Seems that our Idiot-in-Chief wants to remove all protections from wildlife living in our National Forests and open them to more logging. This will put the still struggling grizzy bear once again in danger. So much for "The Great Conservationist" schtick. And lest we forget, this Administration is allowing British Petroleum to dump 3 POUNDS of Mercury into Lake Mercury...er Lake Michigan every year. What a schmuck!

Mr. Bush, posing as "The Great Conservationist", is akin to Dr. Mengele, posing as "The Great Humanitarian".....
Both visions are ludicrous - and deeply disturbing.
Early in his Political Career, Mr. Bush declared (by way of his support of Corporate Profits over Public Welfare) that the Environment is a good Cause - so long as it doesn't get in the way of those Corporate Profits. He even agreed that Big Lumber has precedence over the lowly Northern Spotted Owl - after all, those owls only LIVE in the forests Big Lumber wants to cut down.
Now he says that he's an Environmentalist.... Seems to me he is guilty of far worse than owning a house which consumes a lot of energy - he is a FLIP-FLOPPER. Does anyone here remember how bad it was for John Kerry to be a "flip-flopper"? I sure as spit do.... Besides Al Gore's energy use is offset by the exorbitant extra fees he pays. They're called "Carbon Offset Credits", just like Mr. Bush's proposed "credits" to help build "stop-over habitats". I don't have to agree with them, but he's entitled to spend his money any way he wants to.
Back to the owls. Sort of.
When Mr. Bush was Governor of Texas, he allowed that State to become one of the most polluted States in the Union, per capita, and Houston alone was right up there with Los Angeles on the most-polluted list. Nice work, for an "Environmentalist". During his tenure as President, he has allowed the EPA to back-slide on regulating the biggest of the big polluters in the Corporate World. Again, nice work, for an "Environmentalist". Heck, he has even rejected, along with his cronies, the Kyoto Agreement for the past seven years. The "reasoning" behind rejecting the Agreement? It will "harm the U.S. Economy"... Such an "Environmentalist", is Mr. Bush.
And now he wants to protect two species of fish which are important to TOURISM and SPORT ANGLERS - two things which "just happen" to draw rather large amounts MONEY to the areas where those two species of fish happen to live.
Yes, Mr. Bush, you such a great Environmentalist, after all. Just like Dr. Mengele was such a great Humanitarian.

You know, I get so sick of liberals attacking President Bush with these stupid little names while making excuses for their "heros". What the hell are "carbon credits", anyway? Someones excuse for burning more jet fuel than the rest of us? What makes it alright for lefties to attack republicans in such a manner, but righties had better hold their tongues when talking about the sacred cows of the left?
I have found it difficult to have a free flow of ideas with liberals, as free speech seems to mean free for them, not for me. As someone who has been over the mountain and seen the elephant, I would suggest all the haters go out and live in the real world. They might come back with a different attitude... look deep in the mirror and tell me they have something more than their shallow, hate them because they aren't democrats exterior.
Think about how good we have it in the US, and then think about why.

Check Snopes. It's a fact.
House #1
A 20 room mansion (not including 8 bathrooms) heated by natural gas. Add on a pool (and a pool house) and a separate guest house, all heated by gas. In one month this residence consumes more energy than the average American household does in a year. The average bill for electricity and natural gas runs over $2,400. In natural gas alone, this property consumes more than 20 times the national average for an American home. This house is not situated in a Northern or Midwestern "snow belt" area. It's in the South.
House #2
Designed by an architecture professor at a leading national university. This house incorporates every "green" feature current home construction can provide. The house is 4,000 square feet (4 bedrooms) and is nestled on a high prairie in the American Southwest. A central closet in the house holds geothermal heat-pumps drawing ground water through pipes sunk 300 feet into the ground. The water (usually 67 degrees F.) heats the house in the winter and cools it in the summer. The system uses no fossil fuels such as oil or natural gas and it consumes one-quarter electricity required for a conventional heating/cooling system. Rainwater from the roof is collected and funneled into a 25,000 gallon underground cistern. Wastewater from showers, sinks and toilets goes into underground purifying tanks and then into the cistern. The collected water then irrigates the land surrounding the house. Surrounding flowers and shrubs native to the area enable the property to blend into the surrounding rural landscape.
HOUSE #1 is outside of Nashville, Tennessee; it is the abode of the "environmentalist," Al Gore.
HOUSE #2 is on a ranch near Crawford, Texas; it is the residence the of the President of the United States, George W. Bush.
An "inconvenient truth."
The point? Actions speak louder than words.

Petting a bird does not make a conservationist, any more than sitting in the Oval Office makes a President.

I would've enjoyed the little fella taking a nice bite out of W's nose, but that might be asking too much of the owl. Beneath his character, I expect and a waste of the owl's time. Then again, I'm surprised the little guy could stand being in the presence of such a turd. Poor owl.

| So That's His Approach To Conservationism? | Oct 21st. at 10:00:13 am EDT

Fraoch (Shelby, North Carolina) - Email Me

That's pathetic. He's behavior towards the endangered species act is rapacious at best. He wants to delist wolves right now. They aren't even up to the level of threatened yet. Polar bears are in serious trouble due to ice thaw in the artic, but that's all right. I also found it hypocritical that he was holding that little owl when so many of it's kin are in serious trouble.
What's happening to the wolves in this country is most disheartening and distturbing. As am member of Defenders of the Wildlife, I've seen tons of things, and spoken up to congressional leaders and local leaders about aerial gunning in Alaska to calls for all out slaughter in the Rockies.
What really bothers me is that there are so called animal rights groups worried more about what people eat than animals as a whole, but that's me being angry.
Anyway, if people are interested in finding out more about conservation efforts and many of the travesties that are befalling wildlife. I'll set up a link.
Bare in mind also that China has sent poachers into India for decades to kill tigers and even elephants for only certain parts of the their bodies. They send these poachers into the parks that the Indian government has established to protect these animals and keep them out of public land. These animals are sacred to the people of India, however that doesn't stop the Chinese government.
It amazes me how people don't care. What is even worse is how people truly believe that it is our right to butcher animals for our own gain and profit.
Okay, this is a really tender subject with me. So, I'll get off my soapbox.
Note: Defenders has a video about the aerial gunning in Alaska that they wanted the government to see, but you can see as well. I didn't watch because I get upset about those things. So, be warned as it expains the whole of the issue. These folks aren't alarmists it's just a documentary, and I'm a wimp.

Trying to prepare for life among the savages again? He's trying to make more friends than just Cheney for when he's no longer pres. Conservation? He can't even spell it with a dikshunary. One good move for conservation would be to stop having our military servicemembers killed overseas. I have high hopes for Hillary.
