The Devil's Work?

Author: Katie Shutt Source: Diamondback Online (MD)

Title: THE DEVIL'S WORK?
In the midst of all the candy, costumes, jack-o'-lanterns and trick-or-treating most people associate with an American Halloween, students who follow pagan religions will also mark the holiday with solemn meditation and remembrance.
At the same time secular Halloween is celebrated, pagan religions celebrate Samhain (pronounced sow-in), an end-of-harvest festivity. Most pagans recognize Samhain as falling on Nov. 1 but will celebrate it starting at sundown tonight.
Many pagans believe in a mortal world and an immortal world known as Faery, where spirits and passed souls live, according to Rebecca Ogle, a sophomore English and environmental science major and Samhain, the boundary between the two worlds is the thinnest. Samhain is a time to think about the relationship between life and death, said members of the PSU.
"I think secular Halloween is great and fun, but it is definitely separate than what we do," said Casey Mason-Foley, a sophomore PSU member and natural resources and wildlife management major. "We honor death, a part of the life cycle, and understand that everything must die to be reborn."

Apparently, Halloween also has a split personality, a secular commercial one, and one that has little to do with all the hype.

"In disrelated news, this Samhain, a jury handed down a $11 Megabuck verdict, against the Westboro Baptist Church, for invasion of privacy and willfully inflicting emotional distress, most of which were punitive damages. The defense claims that they haven't the combined worth, to pay such a claim, and they won't, once enough such verdicts make their fund raising efforts grow old."
It's about time! It's one thing to state your views, quite another to disrupt a funeral service for a fallen military person. These Westboro Baptists are a bunch of trash! Maybe, like the OJ verdict, the winner of this suit will get whatever the Westboro crowd has, now and in the future, to pay off the settlement. That ought to shut them down.

It's only a student newspaper but, "Many pagans ," Someone was smart enough not to try speaking for the Whole. As far as I'm concerned, worship of Jesus Christ, worthy as he/she is, is Paganism.

Someone needs to type up a memo. "When describing Paganism as a religion, capitalize the 'p.' Failure to do so will make you look like a liar."

"I think secular Halloween is great and fun, but it is definitely separate than what we do,"
All too often people get worked up into a hissy fit because the confuse a cultural celebration with a religious one. Christmas is my favorite example. In the US we have 2 Christmases, the cultural HOLI-DAY with Santa and presents, and the religious HOLY-DAY which is sacred to Christians. The fact that many can't seem to keep the two distinct in their minds leads to all kinds of insanity every year.
