Pagans Are Magickal

Author: Allison Lyons   Source: Diamondback Onike (Univ. of Maryland)

Title: PAGANS ARE MAGICKAL

The Pagan Student Union wants to clear the air of many myths about the Pagan religion: Pagans do not make animal sacrifices and Paganism is not a cult.

But at a panel discussion last night, the students did confirm one myth: Pagans do curse people.

“It takes a lot to get a Pagan to curse somebody,” PSU President Casey Mason-Foley said during the three-member panel discussion in Hoff Theater.

Most Pagans would only curse someone if they were threatening to harm them or their family, Mason-Foley said, adding that one of the most common misbeliefs Pagans encounter about their religion is the belief that they are Satanists.

Actually, it would appear that the reporter pulled fragments of statements out of an entire panel discussion, many clipped out of context, and possibly just not understanding and communicating clearly.

The comments below the article actually show the PSU there as explaining themselves rather clearly (and apparently a very apologetic reporter) ...so, maybe it's not all too bad if there's some kind of frank discussion there.

I agree; this is bad p.r. all over. I'd like to remind everyone that this is also the time of year when
reporters are looking to juice-up their stories on the Craft and Paganism. I've witnessed dear friends of mine get cut to the core by statements that were taken out of context, or simply misunderstood; some of which has ruined their Craft participation. I urge caution if approached by the media on this subject, especially at this time of year. Remember the fourth pillar- to keep silent? -Blessings

Pagans simply celebrate earth religions. The do not necessarily practice magick. It is an umbrella term concerning an earth-centered spirituality. Not all pagans practice magick!

Magickal practitioners use magick. Many are referred to as witches, and there are many others. But PLEASE do not confuse this in dealing with the public, as they are already way too confused. You guys are missing the whole point in educating about this community. It's clear that those operating the group themselves don't even have a clear understanding about what they are talking about.

And why do you have to start in with curses right away like that? Publicity? Public confusion? Your own confusion? Seriously, your facts aren't remotely straight, and you go straight in for the drama. Bad PR for us, you know? If you don't know the basics of the Craft, you shouldn't be messing with curses as your entry point. I pray to the gods that you guys aren't into this just to be emo or cool. Please find and elder and get some proper training! This path is about learning personal responsibility for your life and growing as a person, not about cursing people and trying to be cool.
