Pagans Are The Rodney Dangerfields Of Religion

Author: Judy Harrison Source: Bangor Daily News (ME)

Title: PAGANS ARE THE RODNEY DANGERFIELDS OF RELIGION
Pagans are the Rodney Dangerfields of religion - they get no respect. Just as the comedian constantly crusaded to improve the esteem in which he was held, so too are earth-centered faiths trying to move from the fringes of the sacred closer to the mainstream.
A Caribou man believes that the nonprofit organization he has created, Pagan and Wiccan Restoration Foundation at www.paganrestoration.org, can help debunk some of the falsehoods surrounding the practices of pagan and Wiccan worship.
"For years now, there’s been so much discrimination against anyone dealing with pagan or Wiccan rituals," he said earlier this year. "Most people hear pagan or Wicca and think witches. Few people understand what actually we do."

by why should we (or any other group) really care what another person or group thinks, as long as they comport themselves politely, and don't engage in libel or slander?
When asked rude questions, a rude question is a proper reply.

not something I need from people of that nature.
Respect is earned not given freely. Respecting myself, my spirituality and my life is enough for me.
They may keep their thoughts.

When I first read this article, I thought Ric Romero was doing religion columns these days. It's that loaded with obvious information.

The article is not a bad article so I think the complaints are a bit over done. There are articles that actually are harmful but this is not one of them.
As I said in my headline, Wiccans and Pagans are often their own worse enemies at making Wiccan and Paganism look either foolish or weird or dangerous.
Knowing when to go on the attack and when to simply ignore something saves energy for the real attacks on our religions. Accusing everyone of treating us bad just because we don't think they said nice enough, or detailed enough, things about our religion just makes us look foolish.
It was a decent article.

Any other faith, if named as the "Rodney Dangerfield of Religion" in the headline, would be in an uproar. It would be deemed deeply offensive if, say, Judaism was named, or Baptists, for example. People would be seriously freaking out. Not that we should, but that it poses an interesting benchmark of sanity to view it clearly when the name of the religion is switched.
I'm not seeing the author really helping all that much by labeling pagans in this article, though at least a less ominous stereotype was used. And yes, I know the goal was to pull readers with a silly headline. And we do need groups out there to help turn it around. It would be nice if the author helping to spread the word of treating pagans fairly actually behaved like an example of that concept.
Alright, off the soap box. It's just so irritating.

Well, at least they called him Mister Dangerfield, so he got some respect, even when he was constantly despair ing that he never did.. Eventually, Pagans and Wiccans and others will too. But, Nothing worthwhile is never really easy.
