PaCO All About The Goddess, Not About The Pentagrams

Author: Jennifer King Source: The Maine Campus Online

Title: PACO ALL ABOUT THE GODDESS, NOT ABOUT THE PENTAGRAMS
What do you think of when you hear the word "pagan?" If you think of large pentagrams on the ground painted in blood, animal sacrifices and deadly curses, then you have been watching way too many horror movies. If you think of Dan Aykroyd and Tom Hanks dressed in a disturbing level of punk fashion dancing around in goat-skin leggings, well then that's OK, because we love "Dragnet" too - it's a fun movie. But you might still need better information.
We are PaCO, the Pagan Campus Organization. We are not here to harm you, your pets or your children. In fact, one of the most commonly shared pagan beliefs is phrased in the Wiccan Rede: "An it harm none, do what you will." We are here to enjoy life as the gods have given it - or as the big bang has chanced into existence or as the power of the human mind has willed into reality, depending on what you believe in.
We would love to tell you what pagans believe, but that is a bit difficult, as there are so many different religious views that fall under the term "pagan."

"But I have to ask, since when did athiesm fall under Paganism?"
from the beginning. By definition a Pagan (paganus) was a person from the country, a villager/ villein ( from which the modern Villian comes) that did not follow the tenets of "holy mother church."
Athiests and Agnostics would surely fall into this catagory.

It seems the author of this article left comments that her original article and headline had been edited without her consent. Here is what she says:

I picked up a copy of The Maine Campus today, and I have to say that I am very disappointed with how this article turned out. Most of the minor edits I can live with, but they seemed a little excessive, and many of them unnecessary. But the worst part was the title of the article. I don't know who made up that new title, but it was terrible. It says "PaCO all about the goddess, not about the pentagrams". Where did such a title come from? I mentioned "gods" in the article, and actually, the word "goddess" never even came up. Although the goddess is important, most would not say she's more important than other gods.
Also, Paganism is about pentagrams. They are an important symbol to many pagan religions. All I said was that "large pentagrams painted on the ground in blood" were just a thing of horror movies. Which they are. We generally only wear our pentagrams as tasteful jewelry. Some may draw one on the ground in salt, but generally they are pictured in the mind as a manifestation of energy. But anyway, I certainly would not have said "not about the pentagrams". That is a poorly informed statement clearly not researched at all.
I am thoroughly disappointed by the Maine Campus' poor decisions, both with the printing of the original tasteless insult about PaCO in the "Word of Mouth" column and with the butchering of this article. It is not what I would expect of a college publication.

It is difficult to avoid defining paganism when writing a general article this author did a good job of that. This looks like it was intended to get those interested to come to the meetings and those not interested to "not be afraid" to have the meetings taking place.
Including athiests is interesting but plausable - the more rabid athiests would not be interested anyway.

I didn't know that atheism was a form of Paganism, either. Well, not Paganism in the Neo-Pagan sense... but technically any philosophy/faith/etc. that isn't Abrahamic is considered "pagan" with a lower-case "p", so I can see where she comes from.
I attend UMF, and I believe this article was written for the UMO campus. Some students along with myself are trying to start a PaCO of sorts at our branch of the UMS, and I'm glad to see that students have been able to make some headway at the other campus branches. A little knowledge can go a long way!

The article accomplishes it's purpose rather well. But I have to ask, since when did athiesm fall under Paganism?
