Tad Baker Gets To The Bottom Of 'The Devil Of Great Island'

Title: TAD BAKER GETS TO THE BOTTOM OF 'THE DEVIL OF GREAT ISLAND'
Emerson Woods "Tad" Baker of York, Maine, just released his second book, "The Devil of Great Island: Witchcraft and Conflict in Early New England." His first was "The New England Knight," co-authored by John Reid.
Baker is a professor of history at Salem State College where he teaches courses related to historians' work in the public sphere — including museum studies, archaeology and material culture. He is a historical archaeologist, a former museum director and for 13 years has directed the excavation of the Chadbourne Site in South Berwick, Maine.
Baker was an adviser for PBS' "Colonial House" and is a past chairman of the Maine Cultural Affairs Council.
"The Devil of Great Island" is about the "stone-throwing devil" witchcraft incident of 1682. Great Island is now New Castle. The book shows how witchcraft hysteria overtook one town and spawned copycat incidents elsewhere in New England, prefiguring the horrors of Salem, Mass.
