Religion Does Not Really Cast A Spell On Me

Author: J.P. Devine   Source: Kennebec Journal (ME)

Title: RELIGION DOES NOT REALLY CAST A SPELL ON ME

Each Sunday, as the faithful congregate, my dog Jack and I stroll and pick, mend and prune, rake and scrape, read the New York Times, sip our coffee and take in the fresh Maine air while basking in the autumnal showers of falling leaves. Ah, nature.

This rapturous feeling led me to explore Wicca, which is basically a worship of nature, but of course, much more complex than that. Wicca is a big thing with feminists and those “seeking a more woman-positive, earth-based” religion. I’m very big on women-positive stuff.

The part that intrigued me most was the practice of rituals in the great outdoors, parks, gardens, forests, yards or hillsides. Now that’s a religion perfectly suited to Maine. And I like that there is no Wiccan running for president. How many firsts can we handle?

Good article. It won't sit well with some but for others, like me, it rings a bell.

As I began to explore Paganism, I read everything I could find on the subject. I tried it all out and have come to the conclusion that it doesn't matter how you practice your beliefs, just that you have them and live them.

Hiding out down here in the bible belt, it was going to be very difficult to set up an altar, collect the many recommended items and practice outside. Then it occured to me that it was a mental thing.

Now, years later, I simply find a quiet spot and talk to the goddess and god. The full moon is important, so is Samhain and Yule, and I do take note of Summer Solstice.

It's how you live not how much of a show you can put on. Some people need all the accessories - more power to them. Some need others to worship with them - I'm more of a loner.

Neither of us is wrong, neither is right except for ourselves. To me that's the beauty of Paganism.

I'm sure that many of the more "Orthodox" or Traditionalists will find it objectionable, but, much like with Julia Swenney's "Letting Go of God", I found it to be both amusing and enlightening. Often we do come from our birth faiths into a new belief system expecting it to be the literal answer to our prayers, only to find it as flawed as the previous faith. Wicca, with its emphasis on ecology and finding deity within yourself and the world around you often seems to avoid many of the pitfalls of more established faiths. However, after attending a Gardarian esbat I can tell you that many Wiccans can be just as dogmatic and demanding of blind faith and adherence to custom as any Catholic priest or Orthodox Rabbi, even though the oldest Wiccan tradition is only about 60 years old (which is not to belittle it, only to say that the faith is evolving and nothing is set in stone and this is Wicca's biggest strength and not a weakness) . Remember: question everything and everyone. Believe in nothing until you yourself have found it to be true.Shalom and Blessed be.
