City Closes The Book On Karkos Case

Author: Mark LaFlamme And Chris Williams   Source: Sun Journal (ME)

Title: CITY CLOSES THE BOOK ON KARKOS CASE

The showdown between the city and JoAn Karkos ended Friday even though Karkos failed to return a library book she has deemed obscene.

Karkos will not be ordered to jail for violating a judge's orders. The city will not continue trying to wrest from her a copy of "It's Perfectly Normal: Changing Bodies, Growing Up, Sex and Sexual Health."

There will be no national debate drawn to Lewiston based on the arrest of a 64-year-old grandmother.

City leaders believe they made the right choice by choosing to drop the matter. Karkos, they say, still has to pay a $100 fine and cannot return to the library until she does so.

"Karkos, on the other hand, stood by her claim that the book is more about dirty pictures than education."

So... she took the book to look at the dirty pictures?
I'm VERY glad the town of Lewiston chose to drop this matter. Don't give this foolish woman the attention she's so desperately seeking.
I looked this book up on an online retailer's website... it's obviously a children's/young adult book that would be kept in the children's section of the library. Perhaps the town should make this woman get counseling for her obsession with hanging out in the children's section of the library looking for "dirty pictures" in children's books.

This Is One Of Two Books Sep 4th. at 11:33:07 pm EDT

by that same author.

The other one is "It's So Amazing" and covers how the baby develops during pregnancy. It's aimed at younger kids than "It's Perfectly Normal".

They are very excellent books, nicely accessible and non-intimidating for children to be able to read for themselves, and factually accurate.

There might even be a third book?

I like the idea of sending her bill to collection.

Here Is The Awful "dirty" Book She Took: Sep 4th. at 9:45:32 pm EDT

IT's so awful. So pornographic. So dirty. So lewd.

Damn. Even the morons in this country are getting harder and harder to laugh at. You just have to feel sorry for them after some point.

She Stole... Sep 4th. at 9:33:24 pm EDT

thus, based on her own morality, she should be punished to the full extent of the law. That book is the property of the library, and she has no legal right under the sun to keep it whatever her warped religious-fanatic reasoning. She should be prosecuted, and kept in jail until it is returned to the library from which she stole it!

Another Nut Case... Sep 4th. at 8:06:26 pm EDT

Raven Cadwell (Williamsburg, Virginia) - Email Me

Is it just me or does it seem like there are more and more of them popping up every day? Perhaps she needs to reread her Buybul, namely that part about "thou shalt not steal". Yet another case of right wing Christian hippocracy.
Either way, copies of the book were donated. I don't see the sense in turning her into a martyr for the fundies (who we all know will come out in droves with $ to defend her) . She was punished and I don't think will be back to the local library anytime soon.

Whew! One Less Manufactured Martyr! Sep 4th. at 7:51:27 pm EDT

A wise decision, as I see it.

She doesn't get to be the darling of the local book-burners. Not only that, but all those people who want to "protect" us from ourselves won't be able to claim persecution or make her into some sort of martyr.

That makes sense.

The city should just tack the bill right into her taxes.

Lewiston, Maine Sep 4th. at 7:28:33 pm EDT

Ananta Androscoggin (Greene, Maine) - Email Me

Lewiston is the town next-over from here, and has traditionally (well, maybe for a century or so) been heavily French-Canadian Catholic. That is changing nowadays, especially with all of the Somali refugees who have ended up living there. And you can bet that alone has caused endless emotional turmoil to the locals of both Lewiston and Auburn (the city across the river from Lewiston) about dealing with the culture clash.

There have been problems, there have been incidents, but it has all gone much less troublesome than most folk would have predicted.

Interfaith Maine (of which the Maine Pagan Clergy Assn. is a member) and the Bates College chaplain's department have both also played a large part in working to make interfaith relations and activities locally more likely to happen, and more probable to succeed.

Oh, and there are a whole bunch of us Pagans all over the area, as well.

The Library Has Enough Copies Now Sep 4th. at 3:57:57 pm EDT

obsidian ghost (pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) - Email Me

This is just me, but I'd send another copy of the book to her, with a note that says "since you enjoyed it so much that you kept it, I thought you'd like a copy to give to someone else." Sure, that's just another book for her to burn, but that's also more money in the author's pocket, which might lead to a sequel. I'm sure she'd love a copy of that too.

looks like I read the article too fast ... I missed where they had 4 donations so I have to strike my last paragraph.

All's well that ends well.

Don't Feed The Trolls Sep 4th. at 2:13:20 pm EDT

GreeneDragon (Palmdale, California) - Email Me

I agree with the city's decision on several levels, but mostly on the concept of "Don't Feed The Trolls". [Web LINK]

This woman wanted a showdown, she deliberately baited the city and dared them to attack. The city was wise enough to see her actions for what they were, an attempt to gain notoriety.

Sometimes the wisest course of action is to walk away.

Of course if someone were to anonymously (not publicity seeking like her) donate a copy of the same book to that library, and be sure the local press was informed of the donantion by anonymous letter, I would say that would be a good thing showing the woman the uselessness of her actions.

Another Fundie Nut-case.... Sep 4th. at 1:33:25 pm EDT

Karl (Detroit Metro, Michigan) - Email Me

Here’s another instance of one individual attempting to dictate to everyone else what they will or will not read.

Borrowing books from the library is a privilege, not a right. Karkos must return the book immediately. Dropping this case sets a bad precedent, which says that if you’re a 64-year-old religionist nut-case brainwashed by guilt/shame/fear/control-mongering and other incessant dogmatic drivel, you don’t really have to obey the order of the court, as per the law of the land. Oh that’s right, to the deluded fundie religionists, their demonstrably errant texts are the “only true” “law”. What should have been done in this case, is that she should not only be fined the $100, but pay court costs and be jailed for contempt if she does not comply with the original court order and return the book.

Yes, by all means donate replacement books to that library, preferably at least QTY 10 of that same title. And while we’re at it, maybe we should donate a subscription to Playboy Magazine for the library as well.

All a person like Karkos needs now is a hatchet to go with her “divinely inspired” bible, just like that champion of relgio-statism, Carrie Nation……….

I Would Have Done It Myself Sep 4th. at 12:33:00 pm EDT

I heard about this in passing the other day.

I was glad to hear the book was donated to the library. I would have bought a few copies and donated them myself.

Good Luck! Sep 4th. at 12:18:03 pm EDT

Just A Wolf (Seward, Michigan) - Email Me

I am sure that the library will not be getting $100 from this woman without persuasion, but I love the idea of making the payment an debt that would show up on her credit report. The city should use a collection agency to show that they are serious.

Nuts In The Library Sep 4th. at 11:31:23 am EDT

Chatoyancy (Louisville, Kentucky) - Email Me

Having worked in public libraries for over 13 years, I'm not sure I can do justice in describing the absolutely ludicrous things staff encounter on a daily basis. People are appalled when I tell them just a fraction of it.

Some cities have become fed up in the past 5 years or so and have turned to collection agencies. It's becoming the norm to submit delinquent patrons who owe over $50, and some deadbeats are feeling the effects in their everyday lives. EVERYBODY who lives in that city has paid for that book with their taxes--it doesn't matter that the book has been replaced for free. She is still guilty of theft. I'd bet she'd get over her martyr kick double time if it messes up her credit.
