Maine Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage

Author: CNN   Source: CNN

Title: MAINE LEGALIZES SAME-SEX MARRIAGE

Same-sex marriage became legal in Maine on Wednesday as Gov. John Baldacci signed a bill less than an hour after the state legislature approved it.

"I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage," said Baldacci, a Democrat.

But he raised the possibility that the residents of the state would overturn the law.

Speaking From The Frontline Of The War. May 9th. at 5:33:01 am EDT

Roy Linford Adams (Buxton, Maine) - Email Me

You other Mainers may not know me but you know my work. When the referendum went out for basic gay rights, I'm the guy who spray painted all the signs from Sanford to Brunswick (see the link for the picture on one)

Now before I get into this, know that I do believe marriage is between a man and a woman. But I also believe in freedom. It is not the government's job do dictate "beliefs". Any time a government dictates beliefs, especially when it's based on theocracy, is fascism. In short, this is government mandated thought control and I don't stand for it. And yes, I am including the opposition who uses political correctness to also mandate thought but that's a whole other can of worms. I am also mad at the fact that there was only one person in the panel who had the sense to not waste tax payer money and just put it to a vote of the Maine people… which is was going to do anyways. But hey, the house of reps want their cut of the money to they went with a bill instead of being a democracy, Ohhhhh!

What I am trying to bring awareness to is the fact that christians have been working hard to convince everyone that they are being discriminated against for being christian. They cry about this all the time with their fake “War On Christmas” and “Attack on evangelical’s who are home schooling” ect, ect. Yet they preach that discrimination is not only their "right", but duty as christians. Only exposing the hypocrisy and evil that’s inherit in their beliefs.

And yesterday I hear their argument that their churches will be somehow forced to marry gays for fear that the law will punish them if they don’t. I for one, would stand against any such law requiring them to do so. Why? Because as I said before, I am against mandating opinions. If the christian church’s don’t want to marry gays, then fine. Aside from the fact that there’s plenty of other churches who find gay money to be just as green, It’s un-American to force organizations to do something they are against at their core just because another organization is cool with it.

Now to my point. It’s the christians belief that they should be the only ones who get to discriminate that drives me to refuse to do any work for people with christian agendas. I own a recording studio and never will I record any artist with christian lyrics or themes. I also run a screen print shop and I will not print any shirts or drum heads with Christian symbols or paraphernalia. Same goes for my webhosting. And I am very close to refusing to deliver heating fuel to any churches with the oil company I work for this coming winter. I encourage others to do the same. Watch how quick they are to bitch about rights when the tables turned.

Delighted, Yet Scared May 7th. at 12:42:31 pm EDT

Faloku (Arcata, California) - Email Me

I'm delighted because of what the news article reports. I'm scared because only two days ago, I had to explain to my roommate that when marriage for homosexual couples is legalized, churches will NOT be forced to marry homosexual couples against their own beliefs and will. I knew the Christian right has been slinging that lie around, but I didn't know anyone actually believed it!

So Far, So Good..... May 7th. at 10:17:08 am EDT

Churces and other religious places are not being enforced to accept any new standards despite all the ridiculous rhetoric about it. The only real reason for the brou ha ha is because they do want to be the only ones to make and enforce the rules for marriage, fair or not.
Those seeking a marriage don't have to go there-and shouldn't have to. There should be alternatives beyond religion where a couple can be legally married.

At Least He Understands What The Law Is About May 6th. at 9:35:25 pm EDT

Earc (Nampa, Idaho) - Email Me - Web

“Article I in the Maine Constitution states that ‘no person shall be deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law, nor be denied the equal protection of the laws, nor be denied the enjoyment of that person’s civil rights or be discriminated against.’”

“This new law does not force any religion to recognize a marriage that falls outside of its beliefs. It does not require the church to perform any ceremony with which it disagrees. Instead, it reaffirms the separation of Church and State,” Governor Baldacci said.

--

When the fundies finally figure out that the law is only about civil marriage, and that their churches are free to ignore those marriages, we can finally end this debate.
