Organic Farming Can Feed The World

Author: Terra Daily Source: Terra Daily

Title: ORGANIC FARMING CAN FEED THE WORLD
Organic farming can yield up to three times as much food as conventional farming on the same amount of land---according to new findings which refute the long-standing assumption that organic farming methods cannot produce enough food to feed the global population.
Researchers from the University of Michigan found that in developed countries, yields were almost equal on organic and conventional farms. In developing countries, food production could double or triple using organic methods, said Ivette Perfecto, professor at U-M's School of Natural Resources and Environment, and one the study's principal investigators. Catherine Badgley, research scientist in the Museum of Paleontology, is a co-author of the paper along with several current and former graduate and undergraduate students from U-M.
"My hope is that we can finally put a nail in the coffin of the idea that you can't produce enough food through organic agriculture," Perfecto said.
In addition to equal or greater yields, the authors found that those yields could be accomplished using existing quantities of organic fertilizers, and without putting more farmland into production.

We do have enough room for organic farming-in fact we have room for a lot of things- but money and politics determine growth and distribution- which is why there are so many have nots- and fewer haves.

Some use animal waste as fertilizer - you know, ecoli in the food? Then there are the apple trees that don't have to be sprayed for a certain mold, the tree is immune (because it has 100,000X the amount of what is sprayed on the tree naturally and is very bad for you) . I could go on - arsenic is organic, so are pythrens (I hope I spelled that right, from chrysanthemums) .
There are too many people. Our food comes from too far away. We are building houses on the good farm land. Did you know that the edges of the Sahara are becoming farmable again?

I'm a bit skeptical about this, and this is speaking as someone who thinks the Earth has too many humans on it. What about the people who require the vitamins and nutrients from red meat? If we're going to nibble on carrots like timid fluffy bunnies, there aren't going to be many people left to actually run things.

There is plenty of room that could be utilized for food production.

I work in sustainable agriculture and I can tell you that the difference between fda organic and conventional agriculture is no longer as significant as it was 5-8 years ago. FDA Organic just means no chemicals were used as far as pesticides or fertilizer. Unless your Organic product comes from a farm that also has a good land stewardship pact it is still vitamin and mineral deficient. There are some beautiful oranges coming out of Florida and Cali. They are certified Organic and when tested have absolutely no vitamin C. The large corporate "organic" farms just lime the soil, don't cover crop and the fda considers this organic.
Know your food, and support your local agriculture. Buy at a local green market where you can find out what is really in your food, and meet who grows it.
