A Wheel With Five Points

Author: Carol Martin Source: SooToday.com

Title: A WHEEL WITH FIVE POINTS
Sometimes, Jen Rowe hestitates to wear her pentagram, or pentacle.
An almost-universal symbol of paganism, it's worn by many pagans as jewelry, says Jen Rowe, coordinator of the Pagan Pride celebration this past weekend.
"It's a circle with a five-pointed star inside," she says. "For most, the points represent earth, air, fire, water and spirit."
Rowe says she's not alone in her hesitation.

...where these places are that people are constantly being persecuted over their jewelry. I don't want to deny that it happens because I'm certain it does, but I've only had nasty comments about Pagan jewelry like once... and that was from a street preacher who was really ripping on everybody for whatever they were wearing, religious or not.
And my pentacle is like 2 inches, so it's certainly not because it is inconspicuous.

As long as we continue to allow our beautiful beliefs to be pushed into the shadows, they will continue to be. I am a very open and honest Pagan. I wear my shirts that openly professing my undying devotion to the Goddess and God. I wear my pentacle with reverence... I wear it for the Gods not man. There are places that I keep it to myself, not because I am ashamed, but because it has no place there... work. I go there to do a job, not to discuss my person beliefs. I think that is becoming a big problem around this great big world. People don't know what to keep to themselves anymore... the whole 1st amendment has gone way too far... some of these things people are coming out with, I don't want to know. But as far as faith, as long as it is done at the right time, and in the right manner... there should be no reason way we should have to hide, because of thier misunderstandings and wrong doings.

...that people are afraid they can have their children taken away based on their religion alone is because it's been done before. Nasty little lies supported by fear of the unknown (like saying you've been sacrificing animals with your children during full moons) is particularly well-used in divorce cases with children involved and has worked more than a couple of times. I believe I eve saw a case or two like that in Wren's Nest.
It's not paranoia if it's actually probable.
The article itself, however, is well written and one of the best I've read. Kudos to them!

displaying love and honesty for who we are and for what we stand. I too, sometimes wonder why I would put myself up on the block wearing my pentacle for all to see.
But, as was said, they get to wear theirs and none of us would ever dare judge them on their faith, what right is it that they believe they have to do so to us. And many times, I have been the target of such people.
Smiling as sweetly as possible I like to say, faith takes many directions in many people.
Until we learn respect for each other and our own beliefs the world will suffer from the fallout.
Thank you for sharing the article, it reminded me that when I open my door on Samhain, in all my regalia for the celebration, I will still say to those children and parents who stare, take their candy and balloons and say God Bless you, I will return and "Goddess Bless You!" with joy in my heart for them in hopes that someday they will smile when I do so instead of running away in fear. Sadness.
Much love and blessings to you all in Canada!

I'm Jen Rowe and I just wanted to say thank you to those who have given such kind words about our Pagan Pride day, our community up here and myself. This was our best Pagan Pride day ever and I'm still bouncing about how well its' gone. We've never had any trouble with protestors or fundamentalists of any sort; in fact, the worst thing I think we've ever had to contend with was bad weather. ^^I'm very thankful to have been born in Canada and live here still.
Thanks again!

Three Reasons I Will Probably Move to Canada: * They have better health care (and boy do I need it!)
* They have more Pagans (and seem to respect Pagans more) than America
* They have more tolerance towards gay rights/gay marriage

As Jen's co-LC (in the pic, I'm the big gal on the right, Jen's the littler gal on the left, wearing the SSMPPD logo shirt) , I couldn't be happier with our local media. This is the second time Carol has covered us for SooToday (does anybody remember the Timbits from two years ago?) , and she always does an incredible job. It helps that she's a very well-informed insider, of course. We've also had positive coverage from our local daily print paper, though I've failed horribly to find any links to last year's article.
You'd think a small town like Sault Ste. Marie, easily stereotyped as ethnically-Italian and religiously-Catholic, would be a tough place to be Pagan, but it's absolutely not. I think we've done isolation right: when interdependence is a survival technique, it's much easier to put aside what few differences we may have.
And on a more pointed note: Hey Jen! Worship Mama bursts with pride!

No Pagans running around in costumes.
No single Pagan trying to portray his/her view of Paganism as the accepted norm
No slander from a fundie in a meaningless attempt by the article's author to find a "counter-point"
No snyde overtones from said author
Now if only I can find an American article with the same type of clarity.

I just wanted to say congrats to Jen Rowe for being the first person I have seen (although possibly not the first ever) to mention Gerald Gardner in an interview. A lot of Wiccans I know try to ignore the fact that the founder of our religion was regarded as kind of a nutter, and even more try to sweep him under the rug entirely so we won't have to admit that he may have made up some parts of our religion.
So what? Every religion was made up by somebody, and I'm making up parts of my religion daily. He may not have made up the holidays that are involved with the Wheel of Year, but he certainly pulled them all together into one convenient package and slapped the title on them. Good job Jen!
