Harry Potter Can Make Kids Suicidal (Opinion)

Author: John Carr (Opinion) Source: Livingston Daily (MI)

Title: HARRY POTTER CAN MAKE KIDS SUICIDAL
Why are Americans duped into reading and admiring Harry Potter books? Harry Potter represents a male witch, or warlock, who makes curses or spells, which God condemns.
In Africa, witch doctors involved in the demonic spirit world perform curses on people.
By reading these Harry Potter books, your children could be opening themselves up to a spirit realm in which they can become depressed and suicidal.

Yeah, Harry Potter could conceivably make a kid suicidal, since Harry is such a "cool" guy - but there are many, many more things in this world which actually are proven to make kids suicidal.
Homelessness, poverty, being told every day of their life that they are "worthless". Why don't the Fundies concentrate their time and energies on these REAL causes of teen suicide?
Oh, that's right...the real causes of teen suicide don't make nearly as good a story as Harry Potter and his make-believe world. How utterly stupid of me to have even thought differently.

I was waiting for another well thought out, well researched, concise and coherant article about the evils of my budd Harry to be penned by yet another mentally distrubed lonely fundamentalist who probably spends most of his days gluing bible tracks to the walls of his bedroom...
My day is complete now....I am fulfilled...

What this guy is doing is actively seeking converts but I can't see anyone but those who are like minded to him believing this.
It's too sensational to be taken seriously and what he generally says is . 'Get out of the library and into the church.'

Here's what I said, for anyone who is interested:
"First of all, he claims to be Christian but he doesn't capitalize the pronouns he uses to denote God. When I was forced to attend a Christian school, they taught us that one must always capitalize the pronouns used to denote God. I quote the following sentences from this opinion piece with the CORRECT capitalizations: "Get into the Bible and read about the One who created them to begin with." and "I have experienced His power, His forgiveness and His love in my life. Why don't you experience Him for yourself?" Or is this person a different sort of Christian who doesn't feel the need to show the proper respect for his God? Which brings me to another point. Christians are all high on the hog about the Holy SPIRIT and ANGELS and the SOULS of the dearly departed. Don't these entities BELONG in the SPIRIT REALM??? Or has Christianity changed so very much in the last several years?
Has this gentleman actually READ the Harry Potter series? Does he KNOW what's in the books or has he decided to take someone else's word as Gospel?
Most people who say they've been "rescued" or have "rescued" others from the "occult" or "covens" have no concrete evidence to show for their "trials and tribulations." They claim "cover-up" and "conspiracy" by police, government, and affluent and influential people.
I do wish that people like the gentleman who wrote this article and "Dr. Rebecca Brown," or whatever alias she's using these days, would get some much-needed psychiatric help. It is clear to any thinking person that these are nothing more than cries for attention. They want to feel special, so they either make things up or tell fish-tales (expanding on the truth with fabrications) .
Of course, everyone is entitled to have their opinions heard. By the same token, however, everyone else is entitled to voice their disagreement.
Blessed Be"

This guy is stating an opinion, not a proven fact. So isn't he bearing false witness? The last time I check that was one of the things their God said not to do. A recent poll on CNN showed that 9 out of 10 people think Christians are hypocrits, and here we have a perfect example.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion no matter how retarded and un-researched it may be. But sometimes it is so retared that you would not take it seriously, I thought it was a spoof at first. ITS NOT I dwelved deeper into it and realised that it is a letter to the paper NOT an article written by it, I also looked at the forum responces and 90% of the people agree that this guy should go to the loony-bin, thankfully he won't be taken seriously. Thankfully this wasn't a real article in a larger paper though. I bet they published it as a spot filler to meet the page quota.lol.

Also, you don't know which person will become entrenched in radical Christianity to the point of demonic possesion, and start calling down nonsense on people. Just like this guy did.

"By reading these Harry Potter books, your children could be opening themselves up to a spirit realm in which they can become depressed and suicidal."
Has he even bothered to find any kind of statistical evidence that depression and suicidal behavior are more common among Fantasy fiction fans?
My money is on more Christians showing signs of depression/self harming, what with all the guilt and hatred and anger built right in to the dogma. Gods know it screwed with my head for a while.

I knew a few fans who were suicidal at the end of OOTP. But that was because their favorite character was killed off.

Sometimes I get so weary of the accepted ignorance that can come from some people. How many wars have been faught in the name of Wicca? How many people have been persecuted and tortured in the name of Wicca? How many countries and civilizations have been destroyed and reduce to nothing in the name of Wicca?.......See, I rest my case.

I dont get his logic, a fictional story making you suicidal? Really? Ive never heard someone say " I read Harry Potter last night, i think i will go kill myself now." And isnt a god a spirital being? I think this guy is contradicting himself.

JK Rowling compares herself to the Inklings, a loose group that included Tolkein and CS Lewis, both of whom used ancient and Medieval images and archetypes to tell stories that were meant to teach a Christian perspective.
Well, she is in good company. 50 years ago Lewis was being pilloried from the pulpits for his evil stories designed to lead kids into the devil worship. (Funny, he became a hero after he wrote "Mere Christianity" and all those pulpit-pounding-pisants found out he was a practicing Christian.
Lately, though, he is again being pounded by evangelicals. The Inklings sometimes met in a local Oxford pub, they often had a pint or two or three of beer, and they smoked pipes... bad bad bad bad.
I am slightly familiar with the Dr. Brown cited in the story - her name has come up a few other places, too. She is a real nut-job by all accounts, but she says the right things to get fundie-congregations to shell out the love offereings and buy her books, and that is the name of the game.
OH - and by "nut-job," I mean mentally ill in a clinical sense, as well as just plain street-crazy.
