We’ve been told that Thief River Falls is one of the most Norwegian communities in the nation. So, when Norway’s independence day, Syttende Mai, rolls around many residents celebrate.
What’s in a name?
Ernest Thorsgard of Thief River Falls recently submitted this explanation that should be of particular interest to individuals of Norwegian descent.
Have you ever wondered how you got your Norwegian name?
Each farm in Norway had distinctive features, so frequently, when an individual lived on that farm that was what his name was. Norwegians also used their patronymic - either “son” or “datter.” So, their middle initial was the first letter of their father’s name (the Russians also rely on that system using “itch” for son of, and “evna” for daughter of). So, the newcomer had a choice of the patronymic or the place name.
