Branson Ponders Christmas Resolution

Author: Jaime Baranyai Source: News-Leader (MO)

Title: BRANSON PONDERS CHRISTMAS RESOLUTION
On the day Hanukkah celebrations were beginning around the world, city officials in this tourist mecca toyed with the idea of an official endorsement of Christmas.
The Board of Aldermen on Tuesday discussed a resolution declaring the city's support of the Ozark Mountain Christmas celebration, a theme promoted by the area's tourism industry.
Not many board members seemed concerned about the suggestion, even though Branson's City Attorney Paul Link apparently advised them that passing the resolution could result in a lawsuit against the city.
Pat Allgeier, priestess of the Pagan group Greenleaf Coven, laughed when she learned of the resolution. "It's all about the marketing," she said. "They're just trying to make money."
Allgeier said the resolution isn't necessarily offensive, but it is narrow-minded.

If the Branson resolution declares that ALL shops/businesses MUST decorate in a "Ozark Mountain Christmas" theme, I think that would be a bit much. That would be like saying "You have to buy your own Health Insurance, whether you can afford it or not -- and no going to the doctor if you don't have Health Insurance."
But if all they want to do is encourage -- not require -- shops/businesses to decorate, if all they do is say "Hey, it just looks odd when your neighbours decorate, and you don't"....what's the real problem?
It's something to actually THINK about.

Since it's not forcing anyone to participate in a holiday they don't celebrate then I don't think this resolution is a big deal. However I don't see exactly what they're trying to accomplish with it since the secular aspect of Christmas is virtually run by the commercial sector anyway.

Let the city council or aldermen or whatever they are called in Branson - get back to business - which does not include resolutions about christmas. The residents, businesses, houses of worship will all continue to decorate or not decorate as they see fit. The tourists will come or they will not come as they have done in the past and will continue to do in the future, And almost none of them will have any idea if there is a resolution about christmas or not because they don't care. I don't know if my city has one - and I don't care either as it does not seem to be affecting anything I believe in or don't. My city decorates with stars mostly which is just fine with me - the nativity scenes are at the churches or on private property and I love the lights and decorated trees that are everywhere including my house (no tree this year but that is beside the point, it won't fit) . Let government deal with the business of government and let the rest of us deal with religon and holiday decorations.

Pure and simple. Branson is a TOURIST town. Most tourists who go there are CHRISTIAN or of the more conservative ilk. Look at the attractions that made it famous and booming. You advertise to your customers, that's it. Don't like Branson? Don't go. No one is forcing anything on anybody. It makes perect sense since the town IS the business. And if you are a resident, and are of another tradition, think of the taxes you save because of the tourist industry. Think of the town as a whole and the employment of your nieghbors. We Pagans are always about doing the greater good for our communities. Well, time to prove it. Besides, the decorations of this time of year are usually SECULAR (mind the odd nativity here and there) when in the public square. Stores with trees, lights, and the like are very inviting. It's about business and marketing, nothing else. I like CHIRSTMAS decorations this time of year. Just my $.02.

I would like to point out that there are, in fact, 2 Christmases in this country. One is a Christian High Holy Day celebrating the birth of Christ, the other is a secular holiday which incorporates Santa Clause, elves and such. Just because there is alot of overlap doesn't mean we should throw the whole thing out. In my household we celebrate the Sabbat of Yule on the solstice, then a few days later we celebrate the Christmas holiday, presents, tree, lights and all.

We need to start bringing up the fact that all of the christian symbols are Pagan in origin.
--But Marshall said the proposed resolution doesn't have anything to do with religion. "There's nothing religious in nature," he said. "It's just what Branson has been known for during that time period."--
This statment is a logical fallacy all the trappings of the holiday season, i.e. holy day, are religiouse in nature. It just so happens that the christian community has stripped the symbols of the Pagans and used them as a guise for thier deity. Jsut as this person made this comment, he also stated that re-erecting the Yule tree at MSU was a proper desision.
Heck with it all, I think the reason the old god/des are still alive is because the christians give them power through the worship of thier symbols.
Jokes on them huh!!
