Court Ends Bible Distribution In School

Author: Jim Salter, AP   Source: Google

Title: COURT ENDS BIBLE DISTRIBUTION IN SCHOOL

A rural school district's long-standing practice of allowing the distribution of Bibles to grade school students is unconstitutional, a federal judge has ruled.

An attorney for the southeastern Missouri school district said Wednesday he will appeal the judge's injunction against the practice.

For more than three decades, the South Iron School District in Annapolis, 120 miles southwest of St. Louis in the heart of the Bible Belt, allowed representatives of Gideons International to give away Bibles in fifth-grade classrooms.

The American Civil Liberties Union filed suit two years ago on behalf of four sets of parents. In August, a three-judge panel of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a temporary injunction against the practice.

While I am glad to see that this practice has been put to a stop, I am also saddened to be reminded at just how close-minded some of my pagan counterparts can be whenever the word 'Christian' is uttered.

Years ago, shortly after being introduced to the community by my Aunt, I went through the phase so many of us do who come from Abrahamic religious backgrounds. You know the phase I am talking about; it's the "Christianity is an evil, hateful religion and NEVER AGAIN THE BURNING TIMES" ranting phase. And I am not limiting it to any age-group, either.

Now I am a little older, a little wiser, and one of my best friends in the whole world is completing his PhD in Theology at a Christian University on his way to becoming a Priest.

*Pauses for the smattering of gasps*

Furthermore, he is a shining example of what I believe Christianity /should/ have been all along; a loving, open-minded person who does not condemn people of other faiths, or try to convert everybody he sees. For Yule he bought me a book on witchcraft!

So, I urge those of us with inclinations for denouncing and bashing Christians to keep mindful of the type of behavior, and the impression it makes. I do not speak with authority over anybodies actions, but rather as a simple plea to be remembered and taken to heart.

We are better than the pettiness we are so quick to scream 'persecution' over when applied to us. Aren't we?

Hey, why not distribute buy-bulls? Schools already teach fiction to the students.

On another note, don't burn the buy-bull. It's an insult to the element of fire. A paper shredder will work just as well and it's more satisfying.

It's nice to see that there actually are some Christians in Missouri who don't agree with the "push Christ in their faces" approach of the so-called "majority" of Americans. Good on those folks!

Since those tiny little mini-Bibles are free anyway, why don't those Gideons just go door-to-door like the Mormons and JWs? Oh, right....they don't get doors shut in their faces by irate adults in a Public School............

Other than that... I was often happy to get my free copy of the Gideon's Bible -- they make starting the camp fire really easy!

that it was an issue brought up by Christian families. It's about time that they learn to teach their own kids about faith and take into consideration that not everyone wants to hear it.

I recall feeling kinda awkward in the early 90's when we got ours. Being a kid in a crisis of faith and having someone shove a testament into your face is really not good.

Good grief.... I am amazed to find out that this was still going on in this day and age!

I would have thought a practice like that would have stopped decades ago. Ah well, better late than never I suppose.

They Did This When I Was In 5th Grade Jan 10th. at 2:58:47 pm EST

I had a fifth grade teacher, born again (didn't do it right the first time i guess) and he decided to pass out bibles. Well surprisingly the school acted swiftly. This guy nearly lost his job. This happened back in the early 80's. If it was wrong back then why has it took this lost to stop these morons from pushing this crap on these poor kids

It's time to start holding these organizations accountable. OK, which school is next. I agree with other posters - seperation of church & state. If it were an xtian school, fine. But it's a public school, therefore, get your dog of of my tax-dollar paying lawn, thank you very much. Especially if my child isn't xtian.
