Update: Libraries Put 'America' Back On Shelves

Author: ABC News
Source: ABC News

Title: LIBRARIES PUT 'AMERICA' BACK ON SHELVES
A library board reversed a ban on comedian Jon Stewart's best-selling satirical book, which it had passed because of its image of Supreme Court justices' faces superimposed on naked bodies.
The Jackson-George Regional Library System board of trustees was criticized by local residents and in e-mails from out of state after it banned "America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction" last month. The trustees had said they objected to the image.
But the board voted 5-2 Monday to lift the ban, and the book was returned to circulation in the system's eight libraries Tuesday.
"We have come under intense scrutiny by the outside community," said David Ables, board chairman. "We don't decide for the community whether to read this book or not, but whether to make it available."

...was priceless. He thought their assertion that the naked justices was the most objectionable part of the book was hilarious and said "Have they read the rest of it?"

| Typical Issue | Jan 13th. at 10:56:07 pm EST |

This type of thing often comes up in libraries. It may vary depending on the city and state, but the libraries I worked in tried very hard to avoid judging material. Our copy of Hitler's "Mein Kampf" kept getting stolen. Sometimes people wanted it, but more often people thought it shouldn't be available to the public and decided to "cleanse" the library of it. We also kept finding Howard Stern's books hidden from view. Some people even took it upon themselves to go thru the health books and cut/mark out any pics of the nude body. And we were never, EVER allowed to comment on a patron's selected materials--we would get fired for that. My current library has "America" and it's going to stay there. My director is pretty conservative on a personal level--she doesn't really approve of the "Sex and the City" and "The Sopranos" DVD's that we have, but they're award winners and the public wants them so they're staying. Lately a couple of magazines have had either full frontal nudity inside or nude couples on the front strategically placed so that no genitals are showing. (And they're not porno mags, either--I think the one was the cover of Psychology Today.) We had a few patrons grumble, but they stayed. Libaries are divided into adult sections and juvenile sections for a reason. You don't want your kids to be exposed to certain adult material, then do your freaking parental job and monitor what they choose.

Anything that's worth banning is worth buying.

| Bad Taste | Jan 13th. at 2:08:06 pm EST |

While I strongly believe that libraries should have all kinds of books freely available to their patrons, I can make aesthetic judgments. I've looked at that book and seen the picture of the naked Supreme Court justices. I think it's in abysmally bad taste. I am right now exercizing my First Amendment rights to express my own opinion.
But I also believe that such books with such pictures should be freely available in libraries.

is negative publicity... all they did was draw more attention to this book... now it will sell off the shelves.

Jon said on the Daily Show itself that the photograph in question (upon which you can cut out the robes and restore their dignity) is possibly the least objectionable part of the book. He then added "I urge you sir, read it and weep."
On the next night he felt bad that the book ban was overturned overnight, when the library was closed. This of course was the punch line.

My personal favourite section is the reviews page....
"Thank you for your manuscript. We regret it does not suit our needs at the current time." - Jason Hay, edirot, Little, Brwon and Company.
''I would certainly read this book is I were alive today, which, for all you geniuses out there, I'm not.'' - Abraham Lincoln.

I'm glad they put it back in circulation! I mean, really. Who would treat a picture of a 70+ y.o. Supreme Court judge like porn?? And beyond all that, have they seen the book? How many minors would knowingly, willingly pick up a book that looks like a textbook?? ;D
