Mississippi: Gov. Signs Religious Bill

Author: Meghan Blalock Source: Daily Mississippian (MS)

Title: GOV. SIGNS RELIGIOUS BILL
A new law signed by Gov. Haley Barbour will allow the hanging of certain Judeo-Christian texts in public buildings, such as schools and courthouses in Mississippi.
The law specifically gives permission for public buildings to post the Ten Commandments, excerpts of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount and the motto, “In God We Trust.”
William F. Lawhead, professor of philosophy at Ole Miss, cites many reasons why the enforcement of the law is unconstitutional and contradictory to the American standard of democracy.
“It is a government promotion of specifically Jewish and Christian Biblical texts,” Lawhead said. “The first commandment states, ‘Thou shalt have no other gods before me.’ Consequently, in posting this text the state government is symbolically forbidding the worship of the gods of any other religion. This comes as close to the government officially establishing a specific religion as you can get.”

Isn't Mississippi one of those states that didn't want to let go of segragation way back when?
...........so is it all the sun and humidity in the south that does this to some people's brains?

...that in this wonderful biblethumper state of mine (Not Mississippi, but seems awfully close) , I should consider running for the state legislature.
First thing I do: Introduce a bill stating that the Southern Baptist Church (or whoever) is the sole legitimate religion and that all people of other denominations are to be dragged out into the street and shot.
Maybe they'll wake up and realize that I'm pointing out that they're going to far...
...then again, knowing this state, they'll pass it and start to act on it.

This is imposing a state religion as surely as anything. I am sorry for those that disagree with it that have to live with this, but the move is more than imposing religious values, it is also a political ploy as well. If any complaints come up, then they can scream that their values are under attack. But the next step is imposing this on everyone in lieu of the Constitution. Sign hanging is meant as a goad for trouble and little more.

ah...it's the sound of the coming lawsuits. I don't see this bill standing for very long as it is a clear violation of the First Amendment and, possibly, the 14th.

Has anyone tested the presence of the commandments under the 14th ammendment?
As in: Any non-abrahamist in court for anything at all should file for a change of venue, on the grounds that the religious documents prove that the court is unlikely to be impartial.

Once again, I have reason to regret that Mississippi is my home. I live in a VERY predominately red county, where church affiliation becomes political clout. If this law stands, even though this is a poor county some schmuck will want the powersthatbe to put up a damn monument.
