Mother Sues School District Because Teachers Allegedly Scared Her Child

Author: Elizabeth Crisp Source: Clarion-Ledger (MS)

Title: MOTHER SUES SCHOOL DISTRICT BECAUSE TEACHERS ALLEGEDLY SCARED HER CHILD
A mother has sued the Madison County School District, alleging that teachers dressed up as witches at Luther Branson Elementary in Canton and scared her child.
The teachers dressed up “in an effort to punish the children,” the lawsuit says.

Maybe the youngun got scared because the Teacher dressed up like the typical portrayal of a witch around Samhain? You know the green face, hunch back, gnarled hands and so on. Then they ( Oh Heaven forfend) told the historical story of how this once young and beautiful woman was taken by the representatives of the christian church in her town and subjected to months or even years of torture of the foulest kind ( I could describe some of it but it might scare people) and rape. after all was said and done if she didnt confess and if she was LUCKY, she was released and declared INNOCENT of witchcraft.
Just a little glimpse of the justice system of the Burning times. A favorite trial method for those who had a body of water near. If you were accused of Witchcraft you ( and likely your entire family) were taken to the body of water, a large stone was tied around your neck , you were then rowed out into the lake and thrown in.
If you floated you were a witch. You and likely your whole family were killed.
If you drowned you were proclaimed innocent of the charges ( lot of good that did you were dead.) and your family was let go. ( probably run out of the village though) .
As we know the Witch being tried was probably a midwife that used herbs to ease the pain during child birth or a healer that was causing the local leach to loose patients or Heaven for fend both.

karrie9 (Kenosha, Wisconsin) - Email Me - Web

Personally, I just wear jeans, sweaters, and sneakers.
Heaven forbid (heh) teachers belong to a different belief set, happen to dress in black, or wear a costume while reading a story. **Whatever.** It might scare the parents who have probably already have been teaching their kids to nearly/actually **pee their pants** if they see someone in costume or who looks different, regardless of the fact that their kids go to public school and live in a pluralistic society.
Okay, well, not enough information but it really sounds dumb so far.
For all I know the teachers might be psychological monsters, but I kind of doubt it at this point.

Too Little Information. The fact is, we don't know the facts, because the article was completely lacking in any. Maybe the details made the woman look so stupid that they were left out. I can't wait for a follow-up that shows why she thought the teachers were punishing the kids. Oh well, it's a sue-happy country sure enough. Oh, and my kids read the book about the missing teacher, too, and loved it :)

Moonlight Wolf (Bradford, England) - Email Me

This is nothing new, it's just part of the compensation culture.
Today people will blame anyone for any misfortune that befalls them.
However this one is incredibly ridiculous. A million dollars is a hugely disgusting amount of money which could be better off going to a better cause than lining someone's pocket because they blame a bunch of teachers for their child getting scared.
Children get scared, it's a fact. The real way to deal with a scared child is talking, not suing.
What would the mother have done with this money anyway? Go on holiday no doubt.
People shouldn't look to money to solve their problems as it is this that fuels things like 'none of this in case it offends so and so.'
Think of the poor child and the school. Not money.
Blessed be.

Terry (Irvington, Virginia) - Email Me

I thought Boston Legal ended hours ago?
The story is so lacking in detail that it's hard to judge, but guessing what's likely between the lines, perhaps it's time to require parenting licenses including tests of functional literacy, psychiatric freedom from serious disorders, and basic life skills?
If this case is as specious as it appears, it would be reasonable to dismiss with prejudice, and have damage claims and prosecution of the Plaintiff counsel as well as Plaintiff for defamation on behalf of each defendant, plus for malicious prosecution. It's be interesting to see each of those claim treble the original claimed damages, which would obviously be unsupported at trial, but enough if claimed jointly and severally between the Plaintiff and her counsel to make a malpractice insurer reconsider policy renewal. A Bar complaint and child abuse investigation could also be pursued.
If one kid was in fact scared, possibly with a few teachers in witch costumes maybe last Halloween, that would be a serious problem. It wouldn't be one of the teachers' actions, but of the mother's, or untreated problems her kid needs help dealing with.

Now all of a sudden the fashion police are patrolling the school? At least they didn't hit the child. It sort of makes me wonder just what the kid's homelife is like to be so scared of someone's clothing. There has got to be more to this -than that. As for the lawsuit- now that's ridiculous.

Miss Nelson is Missing!! by Harry Allard -- It's about a teacher who disguises herself as an evil substitute teacher, Miss Swamp to teacher her class a lesson. Ahh life imitating art (except there was no lawsuit in the book) .

I doubt these teachers realized what nonsense had been drummed into these dear little ears. If they really wanted to frighten the Superstitious, they'd dress as Social Workers, at the next PTA Meeting.
