Reverend Rat (Rochester, New Hampshire) - Email Me

I think some people missed the point that this a a press release for another Harry-Potter-is-turning-your-kids-into-satanists rant.
I used to be polite. Now I have a standardized response:
"Of course the spells in Harry Potter are real- just witness the vast number of thirteen year old boys driving Lamboroghinis and having threesomes with Victoria's Secret models every night since the books came out.
Seriously- I've been gaming for years- If magic worked the way it does in D&D, do you think I'd be standing here having this conversation, or relaxing on my 300 foot luxury yaght?"

I laughed so hard at this I almost cried. Seriously.
The whole 'press-release' is so absurd it defies my ability to comment on specifics. Besides, all of the good stuff has already been said in previous posts.
Now, I must sign off. I need to hop on my Nimbus 2000 (I cannot afford the newer models and I had to buy mine at a used broom-lot - hey, I am not rich like the Mr. Potter) and fly east to England - I am teaching a summer class at Hogwarts in the morning about, "How To Make Christian Extremists In America Write Stupid 'Press-Releases' About You."
It promises to be a hum-dinger of a class - I hope all of you will be able to attend...
Enjoy your day - Stone
P.S. On a serious note, I just wish conspiracy-theorists like these would remain outside of the Pagan community. Unfortunately - as recent 'press-releases' have proven - that simply is not the case.

Yes, JAYZUS!! Them evil witches is teaching real workin' spells in 'em Harry Pooter books and talkin' picture shows! I knowed it! Hayell, you all a' goin straight to Hayell!
Seriously folks, Steve Wohlberg is a real funny guy. He should do standup. Really. Verbalisms like; "provocative", "well researched", and "resposes were brief", all give clues to his being an actual atheist deacon for the Landover Baptist Church. What a joker! Wait until the fundies figure it out! Hee Haw! 7th largest? We'll be #2 in ten years or less.
Wally World is selling Wicca online? No pentagrams at the jewelry counter yet. Get on it. Turning from the fundie alignment? What would Bush say? Shop at Target? Ha! Smile about it.
I ain't got nothin but love babe.

while i enjoy the harry potter stories, and admire the research j.k. rowling went through to write them, what is being purposefully represented is fairy tale magic. it is filled with all of the trappings attributed to the legendary magicians of old, both good and evil-- and actually has little to do with wicca-- or even paganism in the strictest sense.
there is no religion even mentioned and while the circle is used for various purposes, it is used in the way that magicians of old were said to use it. to contain and control the various magical creatures mentioned.

Errr...I would like to sit down and have a chat with these wiccans and supposed wizards who said that. And after my chat I am going to ask them to fly around on broom sticks and turn people into animals before my eyes to prove it.
You know, a more possible answer is no wiccans or wizards said any such thing and the guy who wrote this article is full of s**t.

And then there are people who know what my opinions on Xtians is, and they STILL attempt to defend them...where were these people when we were systematically slaughtered? Where will they be when it happens again?
In Perfect Love and Perfect Trust...I know, I shouldn't be so damned negative of them, but sheesh, everytime you think throwing them a bone might do everyone some good they come up with BS like that...what's a guy like me to do?

Speaking from a strictly personal point of view (from 'new' Pagans I've spoken with) ...Pagan religions are the fastest growing religions BECAAAAUUUUSSSSEEEE people are darn sick and tired of being told "You have to do this" or "You can't do that" and "this is the only way to reach salvation." People are tired of being told that everything they do is inherently evil and that they are going to Hell.
Paganism gives them the opportunity to feel a sense of self-responsibilty regarding their faith. It's not following a strict litany of rights and wrongs, but more so long as you're not deliberately harming others, you're pretty much ok. A lot of people find this idea.....refreshing. This whole idea of a fascination is really quite silly. Next thing you know they'll be claiming that Pagans in America are casting spells on the so-called "good Christians" to lead them to the "dark side."

Actually, it was Accio! which brought things to you. That's how Harry got his Firebolt to him for the dragon part of the Triwizard tournament.
And if only we could use that Impedimente on the pens of the people writing these articles.

it's Levi-O-sa, not Levio-sAA" Which is WHY it didn't work. Or maybe it didn't work because you didn't go to Hogwarts like a good Wiccan. Or maybe you're not really Wiccan...Goshes! *sarcasm*
And I SERIOUSLY doubt that the HP books really had much to do with this neato surge in Paganism. Maybe it got some more kids into Latin (like me) but not Paganism, any more than it has converted them to Buddhism or Christianity or Shinto. All they have done is created a new gneration of readers and revived the imagination of the others.

Really?? Why haven't I learned that Wingardiam Leviosa (or is it Levio-SA) spell?? I'd never have to get up to get a soda from the fridge ever again. They're just trying to use the typical BS logic. Harry Potter is actually portraying Wicca, therefore it's a religious text, therefore we have to kick it out of schools (or we should be allowed to force kids in school to read the bible) .
