Escaped cow may not be doomed after all

Author: Associated Press Source: Associated Press

Title: Escaped cow may not be doomed after all
GREAT FALLS, Mont. --A spirited cow that jumped a slaughterhouse gate and evaded capture for six hours has drawn clemency pleas and may not be doomed after all.
Appeals to spare the life of the 1,200-pound heifer came from across the nation after she fled Mickey's Packing Plant on Thursday.

At least, it's nice to know that we can spare a cow or two and have the luxury of not having to kill them all. While I do eat meat-- and eat steak now and again, I do know where it comes from and I also give thanks that by the grace of the Goddess, I'm not the one having to jump the gate in order to survive. I know that perhaps in another place and time, I could be. And so I wish that cow all the best. Everything dies to feed another- and Vegans don't have to feel so smug about that lettuce salad that they blithely munch while condemning the meat eaters. Like cattle, sheep and livestock, those living plants are farmed and harvested for the same tables- and even for many of those fast food restaurants. We kill trees to make our homes and write our post it notes. Grain, which is the living seed for generations of future plants get ground to make the bread and biscuits and pancakes we eat. Lettuce, cabbage, fruit, and the leafy greens are also alive and harvested to be eaten. What needs to change isn't the fact that we eat meat or vegetables-- it is our attitudes concerning the sacrifices made so that our tables aren't as empty as our spirits seem to be. The ancient hunters knew this because their lives often hung in the balance against an unforgiving winter and predators that put us on their menus. And survival of the fittist wasn't merely the metaphor it has since become. What has changed us is that ranching has given us the luxury of not having to hunt. And fast food restaurants and other places have made cooking a choice rather than a chore. We have become jaded, but at least, we still recognize a bid for life when we see it, even from animals we have designated as dinner. At least for now we should consider ourselves lucky that we can afford to indulge in such luxurious condemnation of eating habits. A greater number on this planet wouldn't waste the time to argue such an issue. They'd be too busy carving up the carcass to eat it. We may never give up our need to eat, but hopefully, we can temper this with the knowledge that what we eat dies and was a living breathing thing.for a time- and develop a greater appreciation for life and its sacrifices.

It scans better.
Anyways, now that one has demonstrated that most cows want to be ground into Whoppers, I want to hear no more orders for the Garden Salad.
