Pompeys Pillar's Documented History Dates To 1805

Title: POMPEYS PILLAR'S DOCUMENTED HISTORY DATES TO 1805
As old as Pompeys Pillar is - somewhere around 75 million years - documented history of it stretches back a mere 201 years.
Canadian fur trader Francois Larocque, whom Lewis and Clark rebuffed during their winter stay with the Mandan in North Dakota, traveled instead with the Crow into their country in the summer of 1805. A little more than a year before William Clark entered the Yellowstone, Larocque made the first written record.
He described the pillar as a "whitish perpendicular rock upon which was sketched in red soil a battle between three people on horseback and three others on foot."
Of its earlier existence, we know more about its geology than its prehistory.
