Federal Judge In Montana Rejects Bid To Delay Wolf Lawsuit

Author: Matthew Brown, Associated Press Source: Boston Globe (MA)

Title: FEDERAL JUDGE IN MONTANA REJECTS BID TO DELAY WOLF LAWSUIT
A federal judge in Montana has rejected a request by the government to delay a lawsuit seeking to place the gray wolf back on the endangered species list, saying he's "unwilling to risk more deaths."
At least 39 of the Northern Rockies' 1,500 gray wolves have been killed since they lost federal protection in March. That action placed wolves under the authority of state wildlife agencies in Wyoming, Idaho and Montana.
The three states have relaxed rules for killings wolves that harass or harm livestock. The states are also planning public hunts later this year -- the first in decades.
Environmental and animal rights groups sued the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service last week, claiming the loss of federal protection threatens the wolf's successful recovery.

but I saw a PBS type documentary years ago about a national park where the absence of the wolf triggered a chain of events that eventually caused a large river to vanish which devastated the local plant/animal lifecycle. They reintroduced the wolf and the river and plantlife began to recover.
Does anyone know the details on this documentary?

I have been reading the book "Of Wolves And Men", and I am almost finished with it... It is truly amazing how easily people who wish to see the total extermination of wolves (or any animal) can rationalize such a desire. Even the professional wolf hunters, hired by the U.S. Government in the first half of the 20th century, admitted to cooking up tall tales and outright lies to persuade folks that the wolf was "evil" and a "natural-born killer who would tear out your throat as soon as look at you".
I've even seen a picture of wolves feeding on a moose on Isle Royale, in Minnesota, used to show how "vile and bloodthirsty" all wolves are -- except the location in that picture was labeled as being somewhere in Montana or Idaho, by the person using it as so-called 'proof' of their outrageous claims against wolves.
As for wolves preying on livestock such as cattle and sheep, more damage is done by packs of FERAL DOGS than wolves -- but the cattle and sheep ranchers won't admit to knowing that. Even after wolves were no longer a problem in Montana (between 1920 and 1980) ranchers in Montana would still blame dog-killed livestock on "wolf predations". (In the 1920's the Ross Island Meat packing Company of North Dakota paid a little-publicized bounty of $8 on German Sheperds, a popular breed of DOG in the northern plains at the time and often responsible for killing cattle, the slaughter of which was invariably blamed on wolves.)
As has been said, we Humans and the wolves are both predators, and compete for the same things -- so it is the wolves which must be eradicated. That's the only "real" reason anyone would want to see the end of the wolf.
Hey, how about we start a drive to eradicate the "nasty, evil, bloodthirsty" Pekinese lap-dog? I've yet to be acquainted with one that won't growl at me or try to bite me.

The wolves are endangered whether or not they are on a list. What the list will do, hopefully, is to keep hunters from trying to wipe them out enmass no sooner than they have recovered. Wolves are endangered only because they eat many of the same things we do, and range the same land we do. they compete, so they must be eliminated--for fun and profit.
