Let's Think A Spell

Author: Wilmington Star Source: Wilmington Star (NC)

Title: LET'S THINK A SPELL
Do some Brunswick County school board members seriously believe that housing Harry Potter in the library is the same as letting a Christian group pass out Bibles at school? If so, it's time for some remedial constitutional reading.
The question came up as a committee was discussing a new procedure for parents to use when challenging material in school libraries - wondrous places where students may select books on a wide array of topics, religion included.

Azuris-Raen (Austin, Texas) - Email Me

oh, come on! Will they EVER quit whining about Harry Potter. Its just an awsome work of fiction, no harm can come from it. If you worried about "posining our children's minds" then you should look at the real culprits, violent video games, violent/gorey movies, sugestive cartoons (not anime, its on a different level) on childen channels. THOSE are what REALLY posin everyone's minds and desensivties us, not some book. Twelve years ago they wouldn't dare put on children's TV what they do now-a-days, trust me I watched it flourish. Back on topic: HP sparkes imaginations and gives kids a good reason to read books. Who cares if they cast magick ( ohhhhhhhhh!, shakes hands) , besides waving a wand and speaking latin/gibberish doesn't constitute spellcasting. Even then if people still have problems with HP, they have to realise that banning/keeping away any material or information will only make it worse. Think of prohibition for example... You cannot just shield stuff away from children, they will be misinformed, draw ridiculous conclusions, and then there is the possibility of revolting coventional knowledge and learning/becoming part of it. You have to let them experience it and let them draw their own conclusions, they might be naive, but they aren't stupid, children can be extremely resourcful; trust me I know.

Lorca (Longview, Washington) - Email Me

HP is OK because it's fiction. Fine. So why don't we all just agree that the Christian Bible, as well as all the other competing collections of "the complete and unerring word of God" are works of fiction and stop all this bickering about whose religious dogma gets preferential treatment?

Erihu (Sunset Beach, North Carolina) - Email Me

This is my neck of the woods. I have two kids in Brunswick County schools. Looks like I'll be sending a lengthy email to the school board in a bit.
Mrs. Babson, here's you sign!!!
