Brunswick Schools Consider Book Policy

Author: Jason M. Rodriguez ,The Sun News Source: Myrtle Beach Online (NC)

Title: BRUNSWICK SCHOOLS CONSIDER BOOK POLICY
Brunswick County school officials will consider a procedure for students' parents to challenge books available at school libraries.
This comes one year after a public, nationwide discussion about allowing religious materials to be distributed in Brunswick County high schools.
Board member Jimmy Hobbs said he sees the importance of reviewing the policy.
"The issue is a valid issue," Hobbs said. "I'm not attacking Harry Potter. When the issue of Bibles in schools came up last year, the ones that raised the most opposition was the group known as Wicca. Does this policy give them a free pass to get their materials into the schools?"

The bible is a book, just as all my Wicca books are books. A library is to find books and that is the only place they should be in a school, is the library. The only other books are textbooks which belong in a classroom. No one should force a book on children and just its existence in a class does just that. I live in SC, so I know what goes on here. It is scary to have someone find out what I am, to know I can't wax poetic about my Goddess as some do their god. My house would be burned down.

Why do the parents think that Harry Potter promotes Wicca? It's fiction aimed at children, even my brother knows that.
Witches don't actually ride on broomsticks or wave a wand and poof, instant levitation.
Rather Harry Potter is a representation of school life with the usual characters in it. Harry is the brave hero who sometimes has to bend the rules in order to do good. (A bit Robin Hood really) Ron is the somewhat timid best friend and Hermione is the obedient brainy friend. These have all been in literature before along with the slimy mean student who has everything go his way (Malfoy) and the overly strict teacher (Snape) and the kindly but wise headteacher. (Dumbledore)
If any of these parents actually did any reading themselves they'd see that.
The magic is thrown in to extend the children's imaginations. What child doesn't like fantasy?

If any text is going to be put into a school library and labeled "Wiccan", let it be the Mist of Avalon (and sibling sequels) . It's more Wiccan than Harry Potter!
However, if we are to include one group in the library then we should include all. To include none is also a great injustice because the school library is often times the only resource for reading material a kid can readily access.

Does the library have the Chronicles of Narnia (mythical creatures and magical weapons) ? Stories of Santa Claus (flying reindeer and magical spells like "laying a finger aside of his nose") ? Shakespeare (magical everything: gods, fairies, spells) .
Harry Potter is as much a Wiccan as George W Bush is a true follower of Jesus' teachings.

(rumages through belongings in background, comes back wearing a robe and holding a shiny golden wand) "Well here goes nothing" ( moves wand through air while saying) " INSERTUS BRAINUS" lol
Get real people, Wicca is NOWHERE near that kind of stuff, it even slightly insults me that people STILL can't get it right. Wicca isn't Harry Potter and Harry Potter isn't Wicca. Just because both have magic doesn't mean there are one and the same. I know for a fact that they would have a field day if we "confused" some of their belifs with other stuff. sigh... ignorance is bliss,.......but it isn't an excuse for stupidity.

I live in Bruswick Co., and this is just sour grapes on the part of two of the lunatic fringe board members who wanted the bibles placed without allowing other groups in as well. They may get their policy to review, but they'll never be able to get Harry Potter out of the libraries here in Brunswick Co. I've already email the Chariman of the Board and will do so again.

I find it uneducated to connect Harry Potter and Wicca not surprising coming from a school
I do not see the problem people have with Witch school which is like a theological seminary.
Hogwarts would be a tech school not a seminary. And people have really gone over board with Harry Potter anyway.
Folks need to grown up

The article is not clearly written. It is hard to determine what he is worrying about from what it says. I think he said he had no problem with Harry Potter in the library but was worried that the Wiccans who objected to the bible being passed out in classes would want, say, The Witch's Bible passed out there too. But, since they can't pass out any bibles I guess it is moot. However, if they are letting parents decide what should be in the library, the bible will probably be allowed and The Witch's Bible will not - just guessing, could be wrong here.

Just wondering, but am I the only one that's a little disturbed by the board member's assertion that Harry Potter is somehow a Wiccan religious text?
That aside, I've got no real problem with the Bible being available in the school library. There are many valid academic reasons for using the Bible, from it's effect on Western culture to comparing the stories found within it's texts to other ancient writings. (Noah/Gilgamesh anyone?) The school would be in no way betraying the concept of seperation of church and state by allowing the Bible to be available in the school library for academic purposes.
Now if the school was allowing the Bible or any other form of religious text to be distributed on school grounds, that's an entirely different matter.

It goes without saying that those bringing this issue up are confusing the fictional world of Harry Potter with Wicca. It is ludicrous on its face, but not really that surprising. I've met Wiccans (well... that is what they called themselves) who had adopted all the trappings of Hogwarts and even worked it into their spellwork. I watched (and listened to) them with a mixture of amusement and horror.
Today, when Wicca appears to be "anything you want it to be baby," I can see why some religious conservative Christians might be confused. I know some of my peers (and I use the word in the broadest possible sense) confuse the hell out of me. One needs only to log on to the ever-grotesque "Witch School" and affiliated organizations and take note of the distinct branding to look like the world of Harry Potter. Could one argue that Harry Potter could lead one into that? Sure, of course it could. In fact, I expect that is the whole point of places like "Witch School" copying the format.
