Schools To Clarify Book Selection

Author: Ana Ribeiro Source: Wilmington Star (NC)

Title: SCHOOLS TO CLARIFY BOOK SELECTION
Shirley Babson knows she's no match for Harry Potter. But some parents have complained to the Brunswick County school board member about the boy wizard's books, and if her proposal is accepted, parents would have more say in what goes on school library shelves.
Babson wants one parent from the Advisory Council, a community group appointed every year by the school board, to actively help school librarians decide which books and other media should be included in each school's collection. As it stands now, librarians maintain a file with suggestions by staff and parents that they may consider in determining those materials.

Most of the school were Muslim and they're even more anti occult than Christians but a lot of the kids and parents showed more tolerance than nearly all of the people in these types of articles.
In year seven the children read Harry Potter in their English lessons, the parents didn't have any problems with that because they knew that Harry Potter is fiction and because they wanted their children to read.
In fact even the students who had to wear full Muslim dress at their parents' request were allowed to read Harry Potter. To me that says a lot about they're perception of fictional magic and the real thing. Some are so strict about not being involved in the occult that they don't read their starsigns in the paper or in magazines.

is that the kids don't have time to go to the library as it is. My son is in High School and he's not allowed to be in the Library unless they are having a class in there. Same with my daughter in Middle School. I don't know what the Hell the Old Bat is worried about (actually, I do know, she's pissed that she couldn't practice religious discrimination last year, so she's going to try again this year) , the kids aren't reading the books there anyway. Well, let them try to remove Harry Potter on the basis of religion. My husband is already planning to contact the ACLU if they try. They'd better plan on removing every other book in there that mentions ANY religion at all if they do that. It won't matter if the shelves are empty, as I said, the kids can hardly get in there in the first place.

She isn't battling Harry Potter? Yeah right. Just everything They think is "bad". READ THE BOOK! Does anyone actually read books they want to ban? Next thing you know they will want to get rid of the dinosaur books, and put Charlton Heston's "The Ten Commandments" in the Non-Fiction section! (Like a lady at our library wanted.) Gahhh! It's a library, for goodness sake. Best wishes, ~Thea

...Good God-Fearin' Christians (TM) pushed me a lot closer to perpetrating animal sacrifice than Harry Potter ever did. I've read every book in the series at least twice...
...and it was Falwellite notions of evil rather than anything off JK Rowling's pen echoing in my head when I almost joined that cult.
I just *had* to get that out of my system.
Anyone trying to censor what everyone reads because they want to shelter their children from anything that disagrees with their own point of view is just trying to get out of a bit of hard work.
I can understand not wanting to feel like the bad guy by saying "No you can't" to your kid. I don't like it either. Maybe it would be more comfortable if the conflict simply never arose. But you know what?? Raising kids is full of bad-guy moments. Deal with it.
And if you feel too damn bad...
...if it's *too* damn uncomfortable...
...if it's *too hard* to bring yourself to feel OK about saying "No" to the little responsibilities you brought into the world...
...maybe there's something *else* you need to re-examine. Like your reasons, or what you're trying to 'shelter' them from in the first place.
But you probably wouldn't want to listen to me. I let my six-year-old watch anime 'cause the morals are good and believe it's important to expose her to conflict and resolution on a regular basis. No, you don't want to listen to me. You'll lose the protection of every herd and pack in existence.

A school is a place for ALL children, not just Christian. Don't want your child reading Harry Potter or whatever, take an active interest in your child and ask to see each book they bring home for your approval. Censor YOUR kid's reading list, not everyone else's children.

I would prefer that they do not change their practices either. This is a foot in the door for banning books. I feel that if a parent doesn't want their kids to read certain books they should tell them so directly rather than to remove them for everyone else.

Stormsinger (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) - Email Me

If a person wishes to ban a book, they must first read the entire thing. Cover to cover. Every book in the series if you wish to ban the entire series.
This is why, as much as I might think the "Left Behind" novels are utter drivel, I would never ask that they be banned. I really do not wish to expose my tender mind to them -- but I won't deny anyone else the masochistic pleasure, if they really insist.
Honestly, how could anyone could get through the entire first book of Harry Potter and still believe it's about real "Wiccan practices" and real magic? Fractured Latin and broomstick rugby? Harry Potter is certainly entertaining, but if they think that's real magic, then they must believe David Copperfield really made the Statue of Liberty disappear, too.

Seriously....what is wrong with people?? Fear is such a negative thing....And when people do not understand something, like another persons relgious beliefs, their fear makes them act out negatively towards it....and then what happens is some "crazy" lady thinks Harry Potter equals animal sacrifice.

Ahr-Ohn (Bridgeport, Connecticut) - Email Me

Actually, to teach magic is itself the path to Magic. That was the Magic used by Solomon's Peace Corp, from which all the "Major" religions come.
The librarians are going to oppose this as an effort of Censorship, and be accused of Turf-War, but they only need demand that the person sent as Parent's Rep be college educated, and the Advisory Council will find itself having to recruit a Unitarian, or give up.

with Harry Potter - so do I. If they find any way to make witchcraft work like it does in HP, I'm on it in a flash. Want to clean house with flip of the wand, not mop and broom. Want the cooking to stir itself and the dishes to wash themselves - oh, yes I do.
However, there are still no witchcraft clues in the books and we still don't sacrifice animals so the little kiddies won't learn it from the witches. I sure wish they'd put a cork in it.

I guess I must have missed the memo about our "neo-pagan Wiccan" doctrine. When did we get a doctrine and who on earth approved it?
And I read all the Harry Potter books so if it was in there, I didn't even notice. If there is some kind of secret decoder ring that will unlock the hidden Wiccan secrets of Harry Potter, I wish the fundies would tell us real Wiccans where it is so we could enjoy it too.

And here we read about another person pushing for a way to censor library books who states she hasn't read any of the HP series, yet she knows it indoctrinates children into the Wiccan religion and will lead them to performing animal sacrifice. I truly loathe stupid people.

Silverwing (Colorado Springs, Colorado) - Email Me

Then they need to stick with the current policy. Imagine having one totally dug in parent sitting on the board and vetoing every book that doesn't fit his/her idea of what is good. I don't care if this person is christian, Pagan, or anything else. Doesn't matter. If this is a public school, then it sounds to me like this has all the potential of a 'state imposed' religious bent in the reading material. They would do well to leave it the way it is.
