EEOC Rules Belmont Abbey Discriminated Against Women Members

Author: Amanda Memrick Source: Gaston Gazette (NC)

Title: EEOC RULES BELMONT ABBEY DISCRIMINATED AGAINST WOMEN MEMBERS
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission determined that Belmont Abbey College discriminated against women and retaliated against faculty members who filed a charge of employment discrimination, according to EEOC documents.
An EEOC determination letter states that the college discriminated based on gender by denying contraceptive benefits in the college’s health coverage plan, according to an EEOC determination.
“By denying prescription contraception drugs, Respondent (the college) is discriminating based on gender because only females take oral prescription contraceptives,” wrote Reuben Daniels Jr., the EEOC Charlotte District Office director, in the determination. “By denying coverage, men are not affected, only women.”

Dynnys Derwydd (Lubbock, Texas) - Email Me

Let's face it, may will probably post something that says, "Shame on them!" Yet it you were to look up Belmont Abbey College online you'll find out that it's a Catholic college, owned and run by the Catholic church. As such it is a private institution that does not take federal or state funds. Therefore the EEOC is overreaching itself in its findings.
While I personally have nothing against contraception or abortion, I do believe that a Catholic school should not be expected to have their medical insurance pay for such as both are against Roman Catholic beliefs. And as a private religious organization it is appalling that the federal government is stepping in.
