Fargo Man Wants To Remove Goddess Statue

Author: Associated Press   Source: Bismarck Tribune (ND)

Title: FARGO MAN WANTS TO REMOVE GODDESS STATUE

A Fargo activist has asked a University of North Dakota law professor to help him sue to remove the statue of a Greek goddess from the top of the Grand Forks County Courthouse.

Wishnatsky wrote to Laura Rovner, director of the clinical education program at the UND law school, asking her help in a lawsuit to have a statue of the goddess Themis removed.

Themis, the ancient Greek goddess of law and order, traditionally has been a symbol at U.S. courthouses, her eyes blindfolded and holding the scales of justice. Her statue has been atop the Grand Forks County Courthouse for nearly 90 years.

"As a Christian, I find such representations of pagan religious figures in public places very distressing," Wishnatsky wrote to Rovner.

OK, this ought to be a sticky one... Technically, can the court system actually hear this case to begin with? or would it be a conflict of interest because they are directly involved with the case? What's next, taking the eye of Horus (spl?) off the back of U.S. currency?

I Don't Understand Nov 2nd. at 5:02:55 pm EST

by Caoimhin Moonled (Kansas USA) - wc_xemail

""As a Christian, I find such representations of pagan religious figures in public places very distressing, " Wishnatsky wrote. DISTRESSING? Do people like this sit at home chewing their fingernails over stuff like this?

Or do they just want (a) to be noticed, (b) revenge for removal of 10 Commandments plaques or (c) both of the above?

I don't understand: shouldn't Christians be offended by the 10 Commandments? I thought the whole point about Jesus was that he came to end the "old covenant" between man and god and replace it with the rule of love. Doesn't that make the 10 Commandments obsolete, and as such, non Christian?

Who Cares? Nov 2nd. at 3:39:04 pm EST

by Chad (Denton, Texas) - wc_xemail

Why do people bother with objecting to statues and city seals, archaic flags and the like? No regular people pay any attention to them. A Judge might put the ten commandments up in his or her courtroom, but do you really believe that they themselves are really keeping them in mind all the time? When all is said and done all these things do is gather dust and bird crap.

Difference Nov 2nd. at 1:52:15 pm EST

by LightSpirit (NS, Canada) - wc_xemail

Just a quick comment:

The difference between the ten commandments being displayed and a goddess statue is simple, the goddess staue does not carry with it a religious message stating "Thou shalt have no other Gods before me"

If this moronic slap goes through then we are going to waste a few billion doallars nation wide, and at least a few thousand if not a million with in the state of South Dakota. For those that know the Capital Building I offer up a challenge: do we have any goddesses or gods in the building?

The answer is yes. There are murals of sorts, in the Capital that depict 3 separate goddesses, and one god, but you've got to be up on your roman/ greek gods and goddesses. So even my state would have to do a little remodeling. What a mess and a waste of money!

You Have Got To Be Kidding Nov 2nd. at 6:38:13 am EST

by Brian (Jefferson City, Mo) - wc_xemail

You have got to be kidding me. This same man violated his own religion by trying to sue some one for simply closing a door. Doesn't that fall into that false witness thingy ma bob??? Any way on to the meat of my rant. How can taking down any statue, ten commandments or any other pagan or christian symbol be called seperation of church and state? No matter what is taken down or replaced the people who work there will be the crux of the building. Putting a greek god on top of a building does not constitute it to be a bad thing. I used to live in North Dakota and from what I remember you can't see that statue very well and what was he doing looking UPat a woman in a robe?? It just shows that some people have way too much time on their hands. Put up the ten commandments, take them down it doesn't change that it's a government building and stuff still won't get done. LOL

Honestly.... Nov 2nd. at 6:30:55 am EST

...how would you prefer "justice" symbolized?

I've read all the comments on this board, and everyone has made some very well-thought opinions. I think it's easy to see both sides of this coin, but what image would be more fitting? Someone, somewhere will be able to make some connection to the ancients simply because each civilization is built on the one before. I think it's mind-boggling that the Greeks and Romans had such beautiful, yet true, images of their ideals. If a few Christians are going to be offended by a statue of Lady Justice, why don't they start with ridding their own religion of pagan ideas and symbols first.

"Dear offended Christian, what do your children think of the Easter bunny? how about that Christmas tree?"

The only offense I see in this is hippocracy.

Church And State Separation... Nov 2nd. at 4:44:27 am EST

by Jelly Bean (At Home, On Computer...) - wc_xemail

We knew this was coming. I know the statues that adorn our Courts and Judicial buildings are figurative representations of secular ideas. The statues, in themselves, are Gods and Goddesses that were once (or in some cases still are) worshipped. These statues are not located in temples. People who come to these buildings don't bring offerings, burn incense, pray and pay homage to these statues as they enter these buildings. But, the same can be said of the Ten Commandments statue. Christians didn't stop to pray before it, break bread and partake of wine before it...yet, somehow it was still perceived by many to be in violation of church and state separation. How are these statues different? You have a Christian icon (pre-Christian, for you technicality types-but it became a Christian icon as the years came) and then you have God/dess icons from the pre-Christian era. I don't see a difference. They may be there to represent secular symbolism, but they are still statues (idols) of Gods and Goddess from an era that worshipped them at one time or another. They were not designed to represent a blindfolded woman with a scale...she is represented as the Goddess of Justice...with the scale and blindfold as her symbols. She may have been worshipped by scholars and legal advisors in her time, so that does make her a religious icon of some sort...regardless if she is being worshipped now or not. I, personally, would hate to see these statues removed from the courthouses...but if the Ten Commandments have no place there, then neither does She.

It truly saddens me to be witness to these times.

After Thought Nov 2nd. at 4:18:41 am EST

by DarkWolf (Ohio) - wc_xemail

I just read some of the other posts and started wondering when someone is going to demand that the Statue of Liberty be removed. She represents a Pagan Goddess as well. I firmly believe that if this crap does not end then it is going to tear this country apart and possible start another civil war only this time it will be based on religion. I also firmly believe that the Armeghedon that is predicted in the Bible will be caused by Christianity, not the other religions.

This Country Has Gone Insane Nov 2nd. at 4:07:13 am EST

by DarkWolf (Cleveland Ohio) - wc_xemail

ARRRGGGGG I just want to strangle this person. If I could afford to go buy an island out in the Pacific I would and move there and the hell with the rest of the world. This crap is really getting out of hand. The image and statues of Themis has been a traditional symbol of justice for centuries with no religious connotations attatched to it what so ever. What are they going to demand next, that all the Greek and Roman statues be removed from museums as well !?! This country has gone totaly nuts. These statues are art and symbols and nothing more.

Ah Sheer Bigotry Nov 2nd. at 3:31:10 am EST

by Draven (Crescent City, Florida) - wc_xemail

Good evening all and let me introduce you to Christianity and it's favorite weapon.......brute force and ignorance. If they can't live in harmony in the most liberal country in the world then blow something up. Sure destroy an ancient symbol of truth and light and replace it with an innocent woman burning to death on a woodpile. Slowly I think these people are traveling backwards in social development. Surely Hitler was right when he destroyed religious symbols from other cultures of people and killed them by the tens of thousands.........just something to think about.

Bright Blessings

Lady Justice... ND Whats Next? Nov 2nd. at 1:53:16 am EST

by Riona Twilght (Spearfish, SD) - wc_xemail - Web

Well, let me start off by saying that I live in the sate that shares its Northern boarder with North Dakota. This was the state that not that long ago wanted to change its name to simply Dakota, much to the ammusement of a number of South Dakotans ( I was of that group) .

North Dakota is one odd state, and this attempted removal of Lady Justice from a place that she has presided over for 90 years is idiotic, but then again, what can you expect from _some_ people. I know that not all North Dakotans are morons, I have an aunt that lives up there and she is a Doctor, so she is deffinately not a moron. But North Dakota is cold, so perhaps the cold finally got to the guy that filed the lawsuit.

The 10 Commandments was put in fairly recently, and removed in the same time period. I say Themis, who has been appealed to by both the attorney and the client should remain, she is blind, for Justice has to be blind to be fair and weigh the scales. She has been doing a pretty fair job of it, I say let her continue.

May the Lady watch over all of us always,
Riona Twilight

"The spirit of the Taliban lives in every Fundamentalist."

Remember those ancient and beautiful Buddhas in Afghanistan? The Taliban blasted them to rubble in an excess of self -righteous violence despite worldwide outcry to stop them. That's what I think of when I read things like this.

I suppose one of these days the fundies'll want to blow up the kivas at Mesa Verde, or plow the Medicine Wheel under.
After all, that which they don't understand they fear, and therefore want to destroy.

Excellent Nov 1st. at 4:18:40 pm EST

by LightSpirit (NS, Canada) - wc_xemail

Look at the bright side... at least they are recognizing that pagan religions are still alive and kicking and seen as a viable alternative to Christianity, else they wouldn't be getting their panties in a knot fighting to remove any symbols related to it... funny how history often repeats itself.

It's not supposed to be a response board, but...

"Remember that we, being the tools of Satan that we are, may actually forestall the rapture. That is a genuinely horrid thought to some people"

Yeah, especially to me. The sooner their divinity decides to take them all to heaven, the sooner we'll be left in peace!
