Red Hat Society Ladies Revel In The Freedom Of Maturity

Author: Marilyn Hagerty Source: Grand Forks Herald (ND)

Title: 'WHEN I AM AN OLD WOMAN, I SHALL WEAR PURPLE WITH A RED HAT'
In real life, they are normal women - teachers, business women, grandmothers, wives, sisters. But every once in a while, they go off the deep end. They don a red hat and put on some purple clothes and go out and join friends who belong to the Red Hat Society.
In the past few years, chapters of the Red Hat Society have been springing up all over the country. Evidence of the popularity of red hats and purple clothes in this area was shown Tuesday evening when 57 women gathered for dinner at the River Bend Supper Club. They created a scene to behold - a sea of red hats and the merry sound of women chattering away.
In the Red Hat Society, they talk about anything.

My grandmother and mother are Red Hats...it's like Girl Scouts for the mature ladies...I have 12 yrs to wait though.
My grandmother spends days preparing her hats for their Red Hat Meetings at the local pub. It's so lively...so celebratory.

Huzzah to these wonderful, whimsical, fantastic women! Who says you can't celebrate your right of passage into middle age with joy and laughter and excitement? I have so much respect and affection for these ladies that laugh at "convention" and cackle a merry cackle. I want to be fifty now, right now, so that I can have fun like that, too. I have enough years off, but that doesn't stop me from being a pink hat! I hate pink. Oh well....My step grandma would have been one, had they been around when she was. That woman ran me ragged! And I was a teenager!!!!!
Cheers to the royally resplendent, cardinal capped Crones! Long may they cackle!

Love them! I've heard that their cackles will send shivers down the spines of most cringing pompous prudes. For me, it provides a return to sharp clarity and release of ego-imprisoning tension. Their laughter always drives any of my self-imposed proprieties out the window and self-contained frivolity out into the world. Imagine the tarot card "The Tower"--only with laughter and bliss as the initiating agent.
We see many of the red hat ladies here in Sarasota--finding busloads of these resplendent women roaming the gorgeous Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and the various shops around town. It makes my heart leap to see the sparkling eyes of young girls who come upon these glorious gals who, true to nature, ever guide young souls towards their fulfillment. Blessings to them!

Strikes me that, the more 50+ women there are wearing red hats and purple clothing, the more the point is lost. Surely it's about reaching a stage when one feels able to dress to please oneself, not to suit others' notions of how one should dress. There seems to be an expectation, if not a requirement, here about the clothes - it gives me an urge to join up and go to one of their gatherings wearing a purple hat and red clothing.
Mind you, there's another part of the point that CAN'T get lost; these women are refusing to become invisible. For this, I applaud them!

Hey Guys! don't wait to get to retirement age to learn the best way to go about it! Read books for instance by Ruth Harriet Jacobs, Ph.D. and also "The Senior Citizen Survivior manual". You should read these even If you are quite young, it will give you more time to prepare.

| Also Sweet Potato Queens... | Jan 25th. at 4:59:54 pm EST |

by Cat (Atlanta, Ga) - wc_xemail

There's also a group called Sweet Potato Queens, based on the original group of women in Jackson, Miss. headed by Jill Connor Browne. There are three books out, and many women who are part of this movement, which celebrates the power of women at every age. Red Hats and SPQs are generally on good terms, although SPQs can be somewhat wilder and rowdier than the Red Hats, I am told! Having been to many SPQ events and no Red Hat events, I can't say for sure, but there is a strong bond among "strangers" with celebration of female strength and the beauty of a fulfilling relationship. What a wonderful idea! I visited their website and they look like they are having so much fun! I hope they still have stuff like this around when I turn fifty (which unfortunantly is a long way off) . And if not I can always start up my own group.
Blessed Be!

It's about time that society recognised the value of older women and stopped acting like only anorexic teenagers were beautiful.
