'The Wheel Of The Year'

Author: Karen Herzog   Source: Bismarck Tribune (ND)

Title: 'THE WHEEL OF THE YEAR'

Selena Fox is one of the leaders of Circle Sanctuary, 200 acres in southwestern Wisconsin, which is both a nature preserve and a nature spirituality center.

This weekend the center, near Mount Horeb, Wis., will celebrate Beltane, one of eight festivals marking "the wheel of the year" by a variety of nature-based religions.

Circle Sanctuary, in its 20th year, is multicultural and multi-religious -- those within the community may be Pagans ("with a capital P," Fox said) to Wicca practitioners, many of whom also profess Buddhism, Taoism, Judaism or other faiths, she said.

Because the word "Pagan" comes so loaded with stereotyped baggage, Fox prefers the term "nature spirituality." Nature spirituality constantly struggles in the public perception with "the 'W' word," she said, meaning "witch."

Wheel Picture In Article Apr 29th. at 3:51:21 pm EDT

by C. (California) - wc_xemail

Totally off base, but the picture of the Wheel of the Year in the article took me by complete surpise!

All my life I have pictured the months of the year arranged in a coutner-clockwise ( widdershins) circle. January at 11 February at 10 March at 9 and so on. I don;t know why it is, but that's the only way I can see them. When I went looking online for a nice picture of the WotY to print out for my office, as usual with regular circular calendars, all I could find were the classic clockwise arrangements. I finally wound up making my own and printing it out- so going to the article, imagine my surpise that someone else sees the year like I do! That's the first time I've ever seen that.

I think I see it that way because of an astronomy pocketbook for kids I had when I was young, showing the earth rotating around the sun in counter-clockwise fashion (..which it does, if you view the orbits of the planets from above the plane of the ecliptic, that is to say, from high above the "north pole". The earth also rotates CC on it's axis from the same perspective. ) ...with the quarter months December, March, June and September labeled around the path the planet takes...

Funny how little things shape our views in life..

I emailed the author of this article to thank her for doing such a wonderful job, and received a response. I wanted to share it with all...

Dear Michelle,
Thank you for the kind note. My hope for stories is always to offer the community a little deeper information about things we only know as snippets or sound bites or stereotypes. I thought people would be fascinated by the ancient roots of this spirituality. I appreciate your time and thoughtfulness in responding.

Have a great day!

I'm glad that Selena said (and was quoted as saying) that they aren't exactly replicating old customs, but instead are drawing on them and keeping in that spirit. So many people seem to think that what's done today is just what our Pagan ancestors did centuries ago. You'd have to be a really strict reconstructionist to even be close to being right.

On the other hand, she also said that "Wicca's motto is 'harm none'". NO! WIcca doesn't have a motto. The Rede is also more than just "harm none". Even in its short form it's, "an it harm none, do what thou wilt." That's not just a matter of semantics, but of meaning. "Harm none" means don't harm anything. The full rede means that if something harms none, feel free to do it. BUT, it never says you CAN'T do anything that causes harm.

Wonderful article!!! Very un-biased and factual. They don't seem to have twisted Selena's words. I loved it. I may just email and print this article to hand to some of my friends and co-workers who are still not quite sure what our religion (s) are all about.

Kudos!

Arwen
