Psychic Causes Flap At NPCC

Author: Diane Wetzel Source: The North Platte Telegraph (NE)

Title: PSYCHIC CAUSES FLAP AT NPCC
Psychic author Echo Bodine didn't see this one coming.
Bodine's upcoming appearance at North Platte Community College, as part of the literary festival scheduled for next week, has created controversy.
"The reason for having Echo at the festival is the need to contact intuition," said Ann Milton, an organizer of the literary festival. g."
In a phone interview, Echo Bodine expressed her shock at the board's reaction.
"I haven't run into this sort of thing in 20 years," she said. "I don't know what their beef is. I don't do anything that isn't based in the Bible. If these are Christians who are upset, it makes no sense to me. It's about gifts of the spirit, and we must use all our spiritual gifts. The question is, who is putting this fear into people? The churches. Right? Jesus tells us to use the gifts God gave us. I am shocked that this Dark Ages sort of thinking is still going on in 2004. A friend once said to me that Jesus came to afflict the comfortable. I am looking forward to being in North Platte."

So narrow minded and willing to force their beliefs on people that are differant from them. I think it's funny that they fear the Big Bad Psychic coming to their college.

I lived in North Platte for the first fifteen years of my life. And it sucks, basically.
In high school, I was constantly harrassed by teachers and students for not being Christian. I couldn't walk fifteen feet down the hall without being referred to, in hushed and fearful tones, as a devil-worshipper. Keep in mind that I wasn't even openly Pagan at that time - I just didn't hide the fact that I wasn't a Christian. ('Where do you go to church?' 'I don't.' That sort of thing.) I also listened to heavy metal and dressed somewhat androgenously. Booga booga!
Honestly, I can't say that I minded, since the entire school was pretty much terrified of me and very few people would even look me in the eyes. All I wanted was to be left alone, and that's pretty much what I got. It was alienating, but hell did it ever rock.
Even the school paper, two years after I left for college, was still publishing stories about the "Satan girl."
For those of you who still live in North Platte, if you're out there, good luck.

| How Sad For The Students | Sep 18th. at 12:25:50 pm EDT |

I'm glad I didn't go to a college like that. At the University of AZ we actually had a CLASS about ESP and psychic phenomena in the Anthro department. We also had a guest speaker program on campus, and had some excellent guest speakers. I went to see Timothy Leary speak, if the board of directors at North Platte college are offended by a psychic, they would have had convulsions over him!
IMHO, one learns a whole lot more at a college run by open minds. If anyone is planning on going to college soon, or has a kid who is going, I'd highly recommend U of A. It is top ranked in the country in all subject areas, has a beautiful campus, and Tucson is an excellent city to live in.

| Will She Turn Students Psychic??? | Sep 18th. at 11:30:02 am EDT |

What exactly is so horrible about a psychic? Arguments against homosexual community leaders have expressed fears about them "turning children gay." Are these same people afraid that exposure to psychics may turn children psychic? ...Or are they afraid she'll know all their dirty secrets?
This is a workshop on using intuition to help in writing. It's not a class in Tarot reading or crystal gazing. The author happens to be psychic. Big deal. Is the town so small and quiet that they have to search that far for something to be upset over?
My only hope is that the author treats this engagement with the respect it deserves - sticking to the subject of her workshop and presenting herself professionally as an author. In a workshop on intuition there should be no reason for these silly fools to get worked up. Make it as anticlimactic for them as possible. That will leave them bickering among themselves over "who started the ruckus." ... which should keep them entertained for weeks, from the sounds of that Board!

| Why | Sep 18th. at 11:02:03 am EDT |

What exactly is the issue, because the speaker is Psychic, because a majority objects, or are they a vocal minority? My last question, in all honesty, is why would you insist on speaking somewhere, that indicates that you would be unwelcome, even if it is within your rights to do so. If people don't want to hear your message, it is doubtful anything could be taught, anyone educated, just an atmosphere of hostility. Even those who would be interested in hearing the person speak would , more than likely, remain quiet , and refrain from asking what they want to know. Personally, I would let my presence be known and wait by the sidelines for anyone that wanted to hear me to stop by instead of forcing my voice to be heard and sounding like a bad President.
