Man In 10 Commandments Case Fears For Safety After Paper Prints Name

Author: Media Info   Source: Editor and Publisher

Title: MAN IN 10 COMMANDMENTS CASE FEARS FOR SAFETY AFTER PAPER PRINTS NAME

The man at the center of a challenge to remove a Ten Commandments monument displayed in a public park said he feared for his safety after a newspaper revealed his name Sunday.

The Omaha World-Herald in its Sunday editions identified the man, an atheist, who brought the suit against the city of Plattsmouth in 2001 with the help of the American Civil Liberties Union.

Last September, a federal judge declined a request from the ACLU to stop the paper from naming the man, whom the Associated Press is not identifying.

Besides identifying the man, the story also listed the type of car he drives and his license plate, which is related to his atheist affiliation. The story detailed his personal and professional life and quoted co-workers. Some of the man's writing on religion and Christianity were also quoted as were depositions in which he detailed threats made against him and his family.

Last year the man said he would consider moving from Plattsmouth, should his name be revealed, because his life had been threatened.

Well The Media Does It Again Jul 5th. at 7:00:40 pm EDT

In this case, the man told the media how to get rid of him. They simply abliged. If they are not telling the world where our president is trying to hide after 9/11, then they are telling the terrorist that small pox would be better than anthrax. If its not showing our kids how to make homemade crack pipes its telling the terrorists that our milk supply would be a good target. The only ammendment I choked on was the one that gave the media the rights they have. On a better note, that man will own that newspaper before hes done.

needs to be held accountable if any harm comes to this man because of their negligence.

imo, what the paper did was revenge.
the man's name, type of car, license, where he works...who ever is simply out to ruin his life, plain and simple. i normally don't believe in sueing but in this case, i hope he can take them to the cleaners.

Is Anyone Out There Really Suprised? Jul 5th. at 11:39:20 am EDT

Thrown To The Wolves Jul 5th. at 10:28:56 am EDT

It's quite obvious what going on here. The media, which so far hasn't been threatened by our less-than-illustrious gov't, has thrown this poor man to the wolves by revealing his name and other information about him which should be kept private.

This way the ever-present, ever-ignorant mob can threaten, abuse and even do away with him. Like those murdered civil rights workers so long ago. Not enough evidence to convict, they said then & will say now when this poor man is found murdered "by perpetrator or perpetrators unlnown." They'll keep saying there's ot enough evidence until the perps have lived full lives - like the 94 yr. old FINALLY jailed - and this man has lost his. American justice, it seems, is available only to those who toe the accepted line.

Take Off The Gloves? Jul 5th. at 9:52:27 am EDT

Terry (Irvington, Virginia) - Email Me

Maybe it's time to take off the gloves, and stop trying to feign respect for violent criminals as if practitioners of a potentially respectable religion.

Most pagans and atheists have far more in common with actual Christians than any of us do with violent bible thumpers. It matters little if that form of violence is direct hate crimes, like dragging kids by a chain behind a truck, mad serial bombers, snipers, or arsonists, or indirect like this style of instigation, or the cowardly form by police as mercenary proxies via discriminatory laws. Violent criminal conspirators are just that, not people exercising legitimate religious rights.

All too often we try to show people who are totally underserving of tolerance to freely breath on the planet respect, by recognizing them as if of some religion they fraudulently claim to be, based on the notion of not judging other's paths and assuming anyone is of whatever religion he claims to be. It's not Christian to be a violent criminal, any more than the "christian identity" hate cults monitored by the FBI and Klanwatch/Hatewatch are pagan when some of them coopt a Celtic Cross or Swastika or Norse rune as their logos. Let's adopt one of Falwell's own tactics, actively correcting media commentators and reporters, and remind them that violent criminal conspirators are NOT practicing christianity in any real form, but have engaged in fraud and crime when they abuse political process, speech, or direct action to act as violent oppressors. By the Judaic law underlying Christian doctrine, such criminals and conspirators belong dead, whereas what the biblically defined "other people" choose for their lives isn't really a concern to true Christians.

A correction to media might point out:

That person/group is not christian based on its actions (summarize) .

They've acted criminally by doing (x, y, z) , which are crimes and not religious or speech rights.

We call on (applicable authorities) to prosecute them, or legislature/citizen pressure to create legal remedies to prosecute if effective ones are lacking.

This is NOT about religion. It's about violent crime, and the perpetrators are lying when they claim religion as if an excuse for crime.

Why? Jul 5th. at 7:29:39 am EDT

ForestWolf (Cheshire, England) - Email Me

Jesus would be positively insulted if he found out that people who made death-threats claimed to be his followers.

These people have a right to be angry, but if they're so righteous and holier-than-thou, then they shouldn't be sending death-threats, whether real or just to scare him. There's always another way.

If satan does exist and has duped anyone, it's definitely only the hate-spewers that don't belong in this world: The death-threat senders, the Falwell brigade, the inquisition, the Islamic fundamentalists. The real evil-doers are all the holier-than-thou, whiter-than-white people who assume that everyone else is evil.

Any real Christian (or Muslim, or Pagan or...) would use their beliefs to help them achieve their goals, instead of excusing themselves from them to get what they wanted.

Turn The Other Cheek? Jul 5th. at 12:49:45 am EDT

Lady GoldenRaven (New Castle, Michigan) - Email Me

What is it the Xtians say? Turn the other cheek? Not only that, but nothing like staying true to the Commandments! I swear if Jesus himself came down here they would find a reason to say he was an atheist! But I expect no less from them. Not just being hypocritical, but in such denial about being hypocritical.

Because Jul 4th. at 10:42:30 pm EDT

Ahr-Ohn (Bridgeport, Connecticut) - Email Me

"The Omaha World-Herald would make no other comment than the story it published Sunday, said Larry King, executive editor. The article did not say why the paper decided to publish the story."

Because the editor wanted the paper's malpractice insurance to pay for the relocation.

Breaking A Commandment Doesn't Keep It Jul 4th. at 10:22:23 pm EDT

bigcat (peoria, Illinois) - Email Me

this is one of the reasons that it's hard to make a stand. his name was probably revealed so that he could be threatened. i hope the powers will help and guide him since it is apparent that he has been thrown to the wolves in sheep's clothing for daring to dissent. if he moves, i hope he can then live in peace from those who would gladly break the laws of their own commandments to bring him to harm. an act of the purest hypocrisy.
