Holiday Celebrations Are Often A Personal Choice

Author: Cyndi Waite Source: Daily Nebraskan

Title: HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS ARE OFTEN A PERSONAL CHOICE
"Happy Holidays" is rapidly taking over as the most socially accepted form of holiday well-wishing, as opposed to the less politically correct "Merry Christmas."
The fall season, home of the chilly breeze, color-changing leaves and hot cider, is also the home of holidays. While Halloween and Thanksgiving are widely celebrated and rarely contested, December's holiday is often perceived as a point of contention, in both the secular and spiritual communities.
This may not be completely true, though. In Lincoln, tolerance and acceptance of individual beliefs, along with a general sense of joy for the season itself, may be bridging the gap between various religions and secular holiday traditions.
Jan Deeds, the director of the Women's Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, is a Celtic Wiccan. Wiccans believe in the power and beauty of nature. Their beliefs are rooted in a pre-Christian tradition.
"Many Christian traditions are rooted in pagan traditions," Deeds said.

The holidays (Thanksgiving, Yule, Christmas, New Years) is one time of the year when people are nicer to each other, and in good spirits. No matter what you celebrate, why can't we just relish the kindness that people seem to have toward each other for a month or two.
I'm Pagan, but my wife is not, and we have tons of holiday decorations about the house. I don't think of it as religious, it just celebrates this nice time of the year.
Occasionally people need to lighten up....

I certainly don't care if someone wishes me either a Happy Yule or a Merry Christmas, as long as he\she isn't trying to "politically correct" me with it. The title of this article is right. It is a personal choice, and the term "Happy Holidays" was not meant as an affront. It's too bad when it is treated as such.

After all, in modern times, "Merry Christmas" has about as much religious meaning as "Have a good day" or "Take care". It's been so commercialized and secularized that no matter how much it's rallied now, it will always be about good ol' Santa. Actually, Santa's name seems to have more religious meaning than Christ these days. Think about it... when will you see a child's face light up brighter, the mentioning of Christ or Santa? (A no-brainer, right?)
So Merry Christmas, all. The holiday is more of a peaceful time for the world than a worshipping time for Christians, so enjoy it!
(On a side note, Japan, which has less than 0.5% Christians in its population, celebrates Christmas. It's beautiful and void of any religious meaning, just like it mostly is here. Maybe we should aim to celebrate Christmas like them!)
Just my 2 cents, Blackflame

Meglyn (Anthony, Kansas) - Email Me

one place where, in my opinion, the whinny people of the world really need to grow up and get a life... so what if you dont believe in the christian version of 'christmas' or whatever... the fact that, in this day and age, that if someone offers a greeting, it should be accepted with grace and without looking for some motive which may of may not be there... in fact if offered a "Merry Christmas" why not return it with a broad smile and a hearty "Happy Yule" or whatever your particular brand of poison may be? in theory, we are adults, so why not act like adults?? we have so little sharing now days that even so little a thing may go a long way to improving our lives...
