Prosecutors Say Man Killed Kitten For Sacrifice

Author: KETV.com   Source: KETV.com (NE)

Title: PROSECUTORS SAY MAN KILLED KITTEN FOR SACRIFICE

Officials said an Omaha man was charged Wednesday with felony animal cruelty for sacrificing his kitten.

Prosecutors said John Rosen, 27, stabbed his cat with a sword, dissected its body and then stored the organs in containers for a religious ceremony last week.

IF, that is IF this person killed a healthy pet for a sacrifice I would not agree at all, HOWEVER, unless he tortured it, in which case LEt the law have him.

BUT, it is more likely in my mind that what he says is pretty much true.

I myself have put down a cat myself rather than have his last time be a horrible trip to the vet or to a place that smells of death and fear even more than the vets!!!

"OH, it was a SWORD, how DISGUSTING", BLAH!

I can't think of a faster, more efficient way, though a bit messy. Not the one I used at all. But I can't condemn it.

IT is also highly possible he kept some of the organs for some sort of remembrance ritual.

The bottom lineis there is not even an allegation of any cruelty

The story that we have so far hangs together

Unless it is proven that they killed it FOR sacrifice or cruelly, just hold your opinion.

Seems Everyone (or At Least Most) Assumes... Dec 29th. at 8:45:04 pm EST

based on the story, which btw, in no way gives enough detail or evidence, that they actually did cruelly sacrifice this poor animal.

Does anyone know for certain that the kitten didn't suffer an accident that broke it's neck, and possibly caused other internal injuries? Running under a rocking chair could easily cause that, or trying to run through a door as it closes (I've had a couple close calls with my own kitty in the bathroom door!) if a person doesn't realize they're being followed into a room. They have given such limited information in these articles that there is no way to know anything more than that they are being charged, and that it was supposedly an animal sacrifice, and supposedly that they are Pagans.

A dear friend of mine once tried to rescue a juvenile seagull with a broken wing. She tried to find a shelter or a bird sanctuary or someone to take the bird for proper care, but none of the nearby shelters would take it, and the nearest sanctuary was several hours away. When she called the humane society, they yelled at her... they actually YELLED at her, for trying to help this bird, and they threatened legal action for her having taken in a migratory bird. They made her bring the bird to them so they could put it down. How humane is that??? Meanwhile, she's absolutely heartbroken, feeling like she's doomed this beautiful bird (when, in fact, if she'd done what the HS said she should have done, it would have died slowly, and probably painfully of infection or starvation) by calling them. And on top of her feelings of guilt for having brought them the bird so they could kill it, they actually yelled at her. Humane my arse. This is really sad, because I know that a lot of people there really are trying, but some are not the brightest or kindest. A broken wing is not something that is normally a difficult thing to fix, but no one would even try. After all, it's only a seagull, and there are so many of those. If it was an eagle or some other endangered bird, they would have been tripping over each other to get at it and fix it. But this was only a seagull. It may as well have been a winged rat for all the help it got.

The point of that story is that it's not so far-fetched that the couple did try to get help for their kitten and were turned away. And, as I said before, people can be kinder to their pets than to their human family members. There is nothing in either of those articles, asside from a "they said, we said" story, that proves it was anything other than them trying to put the poor kitten out of it's pain. Honestly, people get so caught up in what the media says, even when they hardly say anything at all, that we're so quick to believe whatever it is that they're insinuating. It happened with 9/11, it happened with the "West-Memphis 3" who are still in prison... it happens all too often.

'Sacrifice'? Dec 29th. at 3:49:48 pm EST

Arcadia's Ashes (Sydney, New South Wales) - Email Me

As a society we "sacrifice" animals for food preference, religion, cosmetics and medicine. We destroy their environment and therefore also "sacrifice" animals for grazing land, roads, housing space etc. And we are cruel, we "sacrifice" their well being for entertainment.

Exactly who is really making the sacrifice? With exactly what moral authority do we claim to own these animals so that we can use them as we please, murder them and count their "sacrifice" as ours. Why are we so sure that we are more important than they are? Why do we use words like "natural" and "traditional" to perpetuate practices that are cruel, stupid and pointless?

My four cats were all rescued. One from a shelter, one (legally) from medical experiements and two from starvation when their mother was killed by a train when they were just 3-4 days old. Any of my babies may have suffered to be 'Sacrificed' by human avarice. It makes me weep to think about it.

Nothing Wrong Except It's Illegal Dec 29th. at 11:51:26 am EST

Mars (brooklyn, New York) - Email Me

Animal sacrifice is a universal, authentic and traditional part of religous practices among ancient and modern indiginous people. For those who fancy themselves as belonging to one ancient lineage or another, there is little that could be more ancient, traditional and authentic than animal sacrifice.

Pagan traditions include bear, horse, sheep and bull sacrifice, much larger animals which by necessity involve a lot more time, blood and carnage than a cat. I'm sorry if you find cats cute and cuddly and get upset at the idea of their use on an alter, but that's not a reason to prohibit such practice. You have to move past the fuzzy sentiments and get with the real world. Most animals and people for that matter die deaths more lingering and with more suffering than a quick stabbing.

I don't practice animal sacrifice because I don't believe it achieves anything, but religous practices, whether old or new, that are bona fide practices and not artifices for sadistic games are to be respected. There may be laws against them but those laws must have exceptions as they infringe on religous practices and beliefs-- in the same way that the federal government was ordered to cut native Americans some slack in their bona fide use of peyote in their religous practices.

We need a little tolerance, don't you think?

This whole story makes my skin crawl! This has been on the news for days and KETV is the first one to mention that it was "pagan" although the details and reason for the "ritual" are still a mystery. I've been waiting since this story first broke to hear what kind of religious ritual they would connect it with and now they are saying it was "pagan" but I'm starting to think that either the couple or the news are calling it pagan to avoid the "satanic" classification... makes me want to crawl back into the broom closet here in Omaha. May the gods bless the cat for what it must have endured.

A Message For Kitten Killers Dec 29th. at 2:55:12 am EST

arinna (Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina) - Email Me

Keeping in mind that the article might be exaggerated or, for all I know even slanderous, if it's true that these people killed a kitten as a ritual sacrifice, I have a few choice words for them.

It's worthless to sacrifice the life force of another for your own benefit. Karmic theivery of that nature is bound to backfire. If you seek a reward from any deity, offer only what have directly produced yourself with your own spiritual energy and personal effort. Self sacrifice is the only kind worth a reward. And just to be clear I don't mean sacrifice of your life because that was a gift and not something you ever earned. Give up something that costs your time or takes an effort of your willpower or your own blood, sweat and tears. All you are saying when you sacrifice another being's life force for your own gain is "I'm a lazy thief with no respect for the beauty of life" and for that you deserve punishment not reward.

Not to minimize the responsibility of the person who may have actually committed this foul deed, but I also blame those who continue to falsely associate animal sacrifice with Pagans as if all Pagans do it. The more they spread the lies that this is normal Pagan practice in their effort to paint all Pagans as evil, the more likely some confused or rebellious person is to find their evil twisted version of Paganism first and try it on for size.

To Be Frank... Dec 28th. at 11:01:58 pm EST

Riding A Pale Horse (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) - Email Me

I'd say that the only stretch being made here is likely an assumption that because one member of the duo is pagan, that this was some sort of sacrifice. Other than that, there isn't much info, so it makes it difficult to make any kind of stance on it one way or the other. What CAN be said is that the party should be held responsible for the cruel way it was treated. Being unable to do a proper necropsy certainly isn't going to help the prosecution's case in it being a sacrifice, that's for certain. A wise woman once told me "don't jump to conclusions for you're far more likely to hurt yourself than not."

Not Enough Info... Dec 28th. at 10:46:22 pm EST

DodiaFae (Rhode Island, Rhode Island) - Email Me

in this article to say for sure what happened. The version I read earlier today had slightly more information in the link than the link seems to be showing now... wonder why the news site would edit it down so much? (Or maybe my internet connection has gone all wonky and is not loading the site properly? But I even googled it to see if I could find it elsewhere, no go.)

Another poster said of another topic that you should try to research as much on a topic as possible before getting heated about it. It's a bit more difficult on this subject, since there really isn't enough info here to go on.

Perhaps these people really *are* the sick people the prosecuter says they are and most here seem to feel they are, and used this poor kitten as an animal sacrifice.

Or:

Perhaps they are simply following some version of an ancient Egyptian practice... The kitten maybe really did accidently become injured, and the couple could not afford a huge (or much of any... believe me this is possible) vet bill. The SPCA or Humane Society would not help. Having no where else to turn, they decided it best to put the poor kitten out of it's misery (honestly, I still think we're kinder to our animal family members than to the human ones at times) and following a version of some ancient Egyptian practice, were simply trying to honor the kitten by mummification.
It may be a streatch, but if you're going to follow Egyptian tradition, doesn't it make sense? (Some who actually do may disagree with me on this.) They revered felines. And they mummified them. They stored their organs in jars and burried the mummified bodies and jars together in tombs with everything they would need when they crossed over. Apparently Baastet did not disapprove of this practice, or surely the cats that they loved so much would have long since stopped hanging around.

I don't follow (much of the) Egyptian path, myself being very eclectic. I have a Baastet statue for my cat (who believes she's a cheetah) , whom I love dearly and more than just about anything in this world or any other (as anyone who knows me would attest.) I would do almost anything for her. If I followed ancient Egyptian practices, and I felt it was what she wanted I'd do it for her when she passes. I would certainly not let her suffer if there was nothing to be done for her and I felt she was telling me she could not go on.

The Defense is that the kitten was killed, to exempt from needless cruelty. The organs were stored in Tupperware, that the Kitten could take part in some ritual. They claim that the SPCA already had refused assistance, and the SPCA claims that could not be. Who was on watch, when the Defense claim that they called?

Of course there was a panic; I don't know of any religion that prescribes a Sword for Housework.

What Really Happened? Dec 28th. at 3:23:29 pm EST

Terry (Irvington, Virginia) - Email Me

I fail to see enough details in either of these articles to have a clear idea what happened. It's possible the cat fell from a tree, and it's possible a human accidentally broke its neck and was turned away by a dishonest Humane society which later denied ever doing that. It doesn't appear this was an intentional religious sacrifice, but that pagan ethics were mentioned to support claims the state is wrong alleging intentional animal cruelty.

Like it or not, so long as we define non-human animals as chattel property, as select humans also used to be classified, buying or selling them, killing most for food, to eliminate overpopulation, or for medical studies or education, as well as religious sacrifices, remain perfectly legal. In some cases they're protected rights, where it's necessary to stand up for Santeros rituals in order to protect broader rights, and hypocritical to not do so absent also calling for elimination of meat as a food source, in violation of yet other religious (and other) rights. Pagan paths exist with very conflicted ethics over recognition of natural food chains, taking animal or plant lives only in balance with nature, or not killing any sentient being (but noting Jains as among sects to define vegetables as sentient) .

While it's not clear what was actually done, or what accident might have led up to humans doing some strange disection for possibly legal reasons, our legal system is very warped in defining domestic animals as both private property and as if possible to torture and abuse. The nature of life and current legal standards diverge in ways that aren't easy to resolve over how US law views animals.

As to so-called protective organizations, it's difficult to claim one which exterminates 80-90 percent of cats it handles has a primary purpose of "protection", though extreme overpopulation could be worse. There are cases of incompetent SPCA officers engaging in home invasions, theft, animal cruelty, and killing of exotic bird populations due more to gross incompetency and arrogant presumptions of some duty to intervene in situations they should leave alone, including one in Florida recently where the birds a friend of the owner was caring for during a vacation would have been fine had a neighbor and a corrupt cop not engaged in a retribution conspiracy, which if crimes against cops could be prosecuted, should result in one regular cop and numerous SPCA agents losing careers during felony sentences.

Given such horror stories and a tradition for cops and prosecutors to routinely perjure themselves, it's not possible absent real evidence to presume that accusations by officials are credible. It's possible in this case that a pet fell out of a tree and took a hard landing, while the owners did something strange cutting out parts later, but nothing legitimately illegal. Or, it's possible this cat was severely abused first. Since it's a media spectacle where grandstanding made for TV allegations are coming from a prosecutor, and conflicting partial statements from others, we'll likely never know enough facts to tell whether there was an accident, crime, or legal but strange handling of this animal.

Why do so many psychos try to justify their acts by simply claiming they´re pagan as if this was an excuse? There is no excuse for such a deed. My heart bleeds at the very thought. I hope that justice will be done and that Bast will care for the poor cat´s soul!
