Giveaways Central to Native Culture, Tradition

Author: Jodi Rave Lee Source: The Lincoln Journal Star

Title: GIVEAWAYS CENTRAL TO NATIVE CULTURE, TRADITION
I'm not even sure who I'll give the cloth to, or when I'll give it away. And I'm not sure what will be made of it once I pass it on. I suppose it could be made into a dress for a sweat lodge or used to make a quilt, or the next person could give it away.
That's just part of the circle of giving among Native people. And as the year unfolds, it's evident the tradition of giving is alive and well.
At each of these doings, families honor loved ones by giving away, or donating, gifts to friends, visitors and the community.

Gifting is part of many cultures. Old Norse, Celtic, Chinese.
On gifting
As children we receive from our parents as adults we pass on the meaning and wisdom that we have found and created. Our children will go further than we have because we have walked the path before them and pushed it onward.
Individually we advance our own way. But we are not totally individuals we are part of a spiritual whole. We have learned from those who have gone before us and from the whole of existence. When one person advances themselves it advances the whole. And that flows back indirectly through the whole making it easier for others to follow and attain his spirituality
When we give back to the world what we have found or was given to us internally, a direct connection is made. This confirms the value of that path and of those who have walked it full circle.
Those paths that improve the individual and the whole are proven by experience. This is the evolution of spirituality.
Their are people in this world who feel themselves smaller for giving up one penny. They can not gift others without lessening themselves.
To gift someone the giver must have emotional / spiritual capital. This is simply that they are not made smaller by the act of giving. What they have to give is real and something more than themselves. In giving they confirm many things. That they have found or made something of value. That they are more than what they give. That they are part of a greater whole and sharing is good for that whole They prove their value to the way as someone who is more than just along for the ride They prove the value of the way they themselves have walked because it returns benefit to the whole.

| I Gave | Oct 8th. at 8:54:52 am EDT |

by Catlady (Saskatoon, Canada)

away my crockpot to my First Nations friend as her daughter and husband were going away to school in different parts of the world. I wasn't using it and it was in perfect shape. She uses it when she knows she's going to have a really busy day and wants a hot meal ready for her much younger children. In the end we both benefitted. She got something she could use and I gave away something I don't use. As an unexpected side benefit, my world has become much more bountiful. This is a tradition we should all be following. Just think of how much good energy we'd produce if we did.

I remember reading about giveaways in the book 'Hanta Yo' by Ruth Beebe Hill years ago and thinking what an amazing custom. What goes around, comes around. What ye sow, that ye shall also reap. The law of threefold return (somewhat close). There's others I can't remember.
