Blame the Druids For Halloween

Author: Emmet Meara   Source: The Bangor Daily News (ME)

Title: BLAME THE DRUIDS FOR HALLOWEEN, BUT ANTE UP

You can blame the druids and the Catholic Church, who cooperated on very few joint ventures in their mutual histories. It all started, as most things do, with the Irish. In the fifth century B.C., long before Guinness was invented, summer officially ended on Oct. 31 on a holiday, which was called Samhain, which actually doubled as New Year's.

Long before Stephen King was invented, the Irish believed that the disembodied spirits of all those who had died throughout the preceding year would come back on Oct. 31 in search of living bodies to possess for the next year. The Irish believed all laws of space and time were suspended during this time, allowing the spirit world to intermingle with the living. And this was, remember, before Guinness.

You know this is horrible writing especially when Meara begins the one paragraph, "Long before Stephen King was invented..." Um, last time I checked, King was human, and he was born with the name Stephen King. It wasn't a pen name.
Ah, well...
Blessed be!

This article has everything, it is poorly written, poorly researched, utterly lame in its humor, AND is insulting to Irish people. How did this person become a journalist? If this is what passes for journalism, why am I wasting my time taking english classes? The other poster was right, nine year olds do write more coherent articles than this.
P.S. Happy first Samhain from me as well.

At least she didn't spout the typical "Samhain, Celtic God of the Dead" B.S. Thank the Gods for small favors, eh? ;o)

This Article Is Rather Poorly Written And Hard To Oct 20th. at 4:25:29 pm EDT

but it is pretty straight on the facts. i don't think it's entirely accurate to portray ireland as the homeland of samhain, but i'm willing to forgive that. thanks to the horrible job the church did converting ireland, that nation is by far the best source we have for celtic traditions.

At least she didn't say that there were actually living sacrifices made. That almost makes up for the rest of the article...

I'm Not Sure What To Make Of The Article Either Oct 20th. at 2:01:22 pm EDT

does seem a little sarcastic dosn't it? At least she got her facts right.

Blessed first Shamain to you!!! :)

Two words: Say WHAT?! I've seen 9 year-olds write more coherent and accurate essays on Halloween than this one!

I don't know what to make of this; She doesn't seem to know what she's talking about at all, based on what I've read about Sahmain from such books as _Wheel of the Year_, _Ancient Ways_, and _Kindling the Celtic Spirit_. Her attempt at sarcasm and wit is lost on me, in what appears to be no more than a short-winded rant.

On another note, I just want to say how elated I am that this is my first Sahmain I'm going to spend as a Pagan. :)
