The History of the Yo-Yo

Author: J. Parker Adair Source: The Gateway (Univ. of Nebraska Omaha)

Title: THE REST IS HISTORY: THE YO-YO
Imagine if one of your favorite childhood toys had pictures of the Greek gods on it instead of cartoon characters.
Imagine if that toy was used as a weapon for 400 years instead of being used to do tricks and impress your friends.
What you've just imagined is the history behind the yo-yo.
The yo-yo is considered to be the world's second oldest toy, behind the doll. According to www.spintastics.com, the toy likely originated in China, but the first historical mention came from ancient Greece some 2,500 years ago.

No, Mouse, it's called a "yo" when it doesn't come back up the string!
And I even had some poor teenager believing that in a store!

The history of the yo-yo certainly has had it's ups and downs.
If you take one apart and spin it like a top does it become a yo?
