Nebraska Clerks To ID Buyers Of Cold Meds

Author: AP   Source: ABC News

Title: NEBRASKA CLERKS TO ID BUYERS OF COLD MEDS

If you buy cold or allergy medications in Nemaha County, Neb., the sheriff wants your name.

Sheriff Brent Lottman wants store clerks to ask for identification from customers who buy such products. He said tracking such purchases may be one of the few ways to fight meth production.

In June, Missouri Lt. Gov. Joe Maxwell signed into law legislation restricting the retail display and sale of over-the-counter medications that can be used to make methamphetamine. It requires stores to keep medicines with pseudoephedrine as the sole active ingredient behind a counter, or within 10 feet of a cashier, or to tag packages with electronic anti-theft devices.

Missouri and five other states already limit customers to three packages of over-the-counter medicines like Sudafed.

It's Nasty Stuff... Jul 30th. at 11:03:28 pm EDT

I have a half sister who I believe is addicted to meth...she's impossibly thin, and tends to ramble lik e crazy when talking...like her mind's going a mile a minute...

Of course, any time drugs have been found near her, she claims it was planted there or that it belongs to someone else...her mom believes her, sadly enough...

Many years ago, this same half-sister stole my purse and the stereo from my car to finance her habit...the local police didn't even bother to come by to check the fingerprint clearly visible in the dust of the place the car stereo had been...just wasn't important enough to them...

Meth is a terrible thing, and hurts far more people than just the user...

As some of you might recall, I used to live in Colorado. The Denver/Aurora area was lousy with meth labs. There were high-profile busts seemingly constantly.

Now here in Pennsylvania, I'm hearing the same thing. It doesn't seem as bad according to the media, but I'm quite sure I'm not hearing everything.

More Meth, Huh? Jul 30th. at 4:10:12 pm EDT

My family lives up north, right off a main interstate, and on some windy days you can smell the ammonia, faintly. The FBI and I don't know how all else actually set up shop in that little town (pop. 3000, including the "summer people) ... and busted nearly 200 people. I'm all for busting drug users and makers. Drugs ruin lives, anyone who has been in a NICU has seen it.

However, what about people like me, who have severe allergies, and can't take prescriptions for them (they really bother me more than the allergies do) ... I've found that most Sudafed cold products work better for my allergies than "allergy" medicine does, and I don't want the Government breaking down my door because I buy them 2 or 3 times a month... especially since I have children, who are prone to colds when the seasons change (doesn't anyone stock up when things are on sale any more?) . I understand vigilence, but think this might be going a little far...

Besides, if I was going to make it, I wouldn't buy a gross of cold meds from 1 store, I would think that shopping around the area would be a lot "safer" (think the toilet paper fiasco every Samhain, it's hard to buy tp, because they don't want the teens to paper anyone's house.)
Just my 2 cents.

I Know About Meth Alright Jul 30th. at 1:26:52 pm EDT

My sister is a recovering drug addict. She was a crystal meth user. She used to shoot it up at any opportunity. She went through this way for years and years. I was living in Ohio, she was living in West Virginia with her husband and two children. She lost her children, her husband has the mind of a 10 year old now and she will forever be an addict. She has been clean for about 3 years now but she tells me she can't even hear some songs because they take her back to her meth using days. She can't watch some movies or any show with a drug scene in it. When she called me one day to bail her out of jail, she had been arrested for possession of a meth lab in the back of a van she was driving, I knew it had gotten out of control. I let her sit in jail for three weeks, when she got out I drove 4 hours to pick her up. She was living in a hovel. A total drug house, with people sleeping on the floor and on the couches and by all that is holy, it STUNK! I literally had to drag her out of there and throw her in the back of my jeep. Then I took her to my house to get clean. She is now living with my mom, working, Has gained good weight, and is clean!! Yay!! She will never get her children back, she will always be an addict and she can point to someone and tell me that they are a user. She will always struggle with this. Crystal Meth is all around us. In every state whether you se it or not.

The Meth Problem Jul 30th. at 12:45:17 pm EDT

by Autumn (Middle O' the Woods, Pa) - wc_xemail

I live just outside the town they are dubbing "the Meth Capital of the United States"....trust me, it's not a pretty sight. Last Christmas, three relatives of ours were jailed for running the second largest lab in the State of Pennsylvania. They busted the largest one two years ago, on the other side of town. My husband is well aware of the problems and because he's the manager of a hardware store in town, is required to have his employees make note of purchases included on the list that the State Police and FBI has posted. Meth labs are popping up faster than the police can find them. Amazingly enough, my husband got wind that the local Amish Sect is doing it too! No one actually suspects them as they buy everything in bulk when they come to town once a week! Contact your local police department and ask for ways to identify a meth lab and get it shut down fast! One of the tell-tale signs is the strong smell of cat urine./ammonia.

It's In Another World Jul 30th. at 12:29:11 pm EDT

One so rarely hears about Meth-labs or meth-users on the east coast of the U.S. It was only when I went west to Kentucky, and farther west, that I noticed that recreational meth use was skyrocketing. In the Midwest, it is soooo popular and widespread, that I can't believe that it isn't popular in NYC, which in many ways acts as the social/economic drug capital of the Northeast...and I know it's there, but people just don't make meth-labs around here. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to see Meth rise in popularity, but I am very interested in what makes certain drugs popular in certain sub-cultures or even U.S. states over others.

Can anyone cite a reason for this meth-inquiry?
