My Mistake

Author: Murray Loss, Hillsboro Source: Concord Monitor (NH)

Title: MY MISTAKE
I made an interesting discovery when I learned that my letters to the Concord Monitor were being listed in Google. One was about prayers being said in a public venue. I criticized a clerk's comment to the effect that people who don't like prayers don't have to come where they are being read. I then asked how the clerk would feel if Wiccans were reading a prayer to the devil?
I was astonished to read a large number of letters at the same Google site criticizing my letter saying that Wiccans do not worship the devil. I readily admit to ignorance in this matter and apologize.

Though I think the author's source of information on devil worship is suspect, at least they had the good graces to apologize. Added to that the compliment regarding the decency Wiccans/Pagans have used when mentioning the author's mistake.
It certainly is a nice representation of the Pagan community considering the foul language and hatefulness I have seen spewed at those who have dared to disagree with the extreme right view of religion and politics by many an alledged Christian.

In a sense, the distinction this critic draws is correct, but goes much further historically.
One use of "pagan" which for many years would be found as the second of three definitions in many dictionaries in effect ridiculed people who dressed and acted like farmers, as if that made them lesser humans. In fact, it's a reasonable suspicion that much of the food eaten by city dwellers whose style of dress could be seen as even more ludicrous, especially were roles reversed, came from those being ridiculed. Urban economies and lifestyles concentrated people near stone temples, where money to fuel church power structures and feed genocidal armies could be far more easily extracted than from agrarians living near the land, on the heath. It's likely that much of the depiction of devil worshippers was for the same reasons as ridicule of dirty work cloths of those producing food for themselves and others, in effect people who didn't fund wars by kings and Popes.
To the extent being demeaned as devil worshippers, or people who look like those working in nature to support human survival would look, means serving mankind and undercutting abuses of power by evil leaders, we might be proud of the underlying implications of what confused or obnoxious predator types actually do imply when they attempt to demean pagans.

it took her a year. Big deal. At least the apology came. How many of us have argued with friends and family, and it took a year to make up? Maybe we could not be so negative with everything???

The last lines of her article read:
" But that is not all! I found a feeling of politeness and understanding in the letters critical of me, so much in short supply in today's bitter debate. This increases my respect for Wiccans. "
I am also seeing that more and more Wiccans and Pagans are expressing a true Understanding of other people who have got us wrong.
It really means a lot , the WAY we say what we say.
Thanks to everybody that wrote!
