N.H. Gov To Sign Civil Unions Bill

Author: Norma Love, Associated Press Source: Boston Globe (MA)

Title: N.H. GOV TO SIGN CIVIL UNIONS BILL
Gov. John Lynch said Thursday he decided to sign legislation establishing civil unions to prevent and end discrimination against gays in New Hampshire.
"New Hampshire has a proud history and tradition of taking the side of opposing discrimination where it occurs. This bill will go a long way toward ensuring that," Lynch told The Associated Press in an interview.
"I believe it is a matter of conscience, fairness and preventing discrimination," Lynch said.
New Hampshire thus will become the fourth state to adopt civil unions and the first to do so without first having a court fight over denying gays the right to marry.

I am glad to see another state has decided to at least grant civil unions to same sex couples. I still belive that if marriage is to be state sanctioned, then lawmakers should not be able to legislate whom shall be married according to civil rights, and churches should only fulfill the customs of their congregations within their own confines- and not decide for everyone else whether within or beyond their congregations by the influence on state laws, allowing same sex couples a chance to find marriage ouside their church if they find refusal within it. Here also would one find a separation of church and state extremely useful.

As a native New Hampshirite, I am pleased to see my old home state taking some initiative and being progressive. Sad to say that I probably won't be living there again, even though i do like it in general. I hope I didn't make a mistake, but I bought land in the Bible belt (TN) and will be building to eventually live there. I have never understood why people think that other people's lives are their business. If gay people want to marry, then they should be allowed without question. The xtian gets their panties in a twist way too much over this. It's just not that big a deal. It is important however for the gay couple to have the same rights as a straight couple has. Way to go NH!!!!!!!!

the ol' home state still has some semblance of rationalism left over from before that schmuck Benson bought the office.
But, as others have said (to flagellate a post-mortem equine) states have no business regulating or liscencing marriage or civil unions, they should be treated the same as any other contract of incorporation. Eran Rathan new hampshirite in self-imposed exile

Now, if only the rest of the country followed suit. I'll be moving to New York in a year. Perhaps I'll actually be able to marry if this keeps up (yes, I know it's a civil union, but I think the government grants civil unions and religions grant marriages) .

It is about time to make same-sex partnerships legal. However, States have no business to license marriage at all. Having domestic partnerships registered for purposes of estates and financial responsibility is all they are authorized to do. Marriage is a religious ceremony and should be left up to covens, churches, mosques, temples etc. and not governed in any way by the State.
