Title: FOR SOME, IT'S NOT ABOUT TRICKS OR TREATS
For many, this time of year means dressing up in costumes, trick-or-treating and indulging in everything scary.
For others, it is a time of reverence for the dead and reflection on the end of the season.
Modern Halloween celebrations have roots in many pagan and christian practices, and while the holiday itself is purely secular for most, it is a religious one for many others.
"Many cultures, especially in Northern Europe, had times in the year when spirits and people would interact," said David Frankfurter, a University of New Hampshire religious history and studies professor. "Depending on what culture you're talking about, sometimes this would be scary, and sometimes this would be something that could be celebrated."
