A Mystery? It Must Be Witchcraft (Book Review)

Author: Taryn Plumb   Source: Boston Globe (MA)

Title: A MYSTERY? IT MUST BE WITCHCRAFT

All of a sudden, late on a moonlit June night, the assault began.

Flying rocks - hundreds of them. Some the size of apples; some weighing as much as 8 pounds; others blazing hot, as if retrieved from a fire.

During the four-hour onslaught, launched by invisible attackers, stones pummeled the tavern walls, coming in like a horizontal rain. They plummeted down the chimney. They seemed to clatter out of nowhere on the ceiling. They shattered windows.

Sturgeon's Law Jun 27th. at 5:57:48 pm EDT

Sturgeon's law says 98 percent of anything is crap. And let's face it, we as Pagans can name easily a dozen books that deride our religion. However I don't think this book is that biased a book. The " witchcraft is a crime" quote is unfortunate and seems to actually have been misunderstood. It might have been a reference to the historical context rather than current religious intolerance.

In reading the book review it sounds as if he was examining a specific case and trying to conclude what actually happened. And yes he is right in that there is an assumption that "witch" in historical America means only Salem.

*"I did something no one in Salem has done before: I wrote a book about witchcraft that isn't about Salem," 49-year-old Baker said, sitting on a patio behind his 200-year-old white colonial in York, Maine. "Witchcraft is a timeless crime."*

You should get off whatever drugs you're smoking.
