A Few Tips On Putting The Fun Into Fungi

Author: Eric Aldrich Source: Monadnock Ledger-Transcript (NH)

Title: A FEW TIPS ON PUTTING THE FUN INTO FUNGI
If there's one thing this summer has been good for, it's mushrooms.
All that rain in June, July and even into August has created terrific conditions for mushrooms. The woods are damp and plenty of things are rotting. Unless we get a dry spell in September -- which has happened -- we're on track for a stellar year for mushrooms.
By some accounts there are more than 5,000 species of mushrooms in North America, and only a handful are deadly poisonous. Many are inedible. Others are unknown. And a few dozen or so are edible, including some that are quite delicious.
Foraging for edible mushrooms isn't something you do on a whim. It takes the steady gain of knowledge; the support of folks who know what they're doing; some good books; and the willingness to be careful.
Dave Wichland of Keene is trying to spread the good word about mushrooms: how they can improve your health and enhance your garden.

Just make sure you are absolutely sure about what you're picking or you might put the 'die" back in diet.
