Don't Forget Samhain When Enjoying Halloween (Opinion)

Author: Rev. Michael A. Engelking Jr. Source: Seacoast Online

Title: DON'T FORGET SAMHAIN WHEN ENJOYING HALLOWEEN
Oct. 1 — To the Editor:
Every Oct. 31 millions of children and adults dress up on Halloween in hopes of a trick or a treat. For most, Halloween is nothing more than a night of fright and make believe at a local costume party, but to some this is a very sacred time and is more than just candy corn and hot cider.
In America and other countries, communities of modern day witches, wiccans, druids and pagans gather in homes, parks, public buildings or a secluded forest to celebrate the feast of Samhain (sow-in), an ancient Celtic fire festival meaning "Summer's End" that traces back more than 2,000 years to ancient Europe.

E-mailed the editor with the following:
"You've made an error when publishing this article. The words "Wiccan," "Pagan," and "Druid" should be capitalized. If you don't do that, then don't capitalize "christian," "muslim," or "jew.""
Because the editor's tiny little brain would asplode if I posted "xian" or "mohametan." ;)

I am Rev Michael Engelking of NH who wrote the letter. I did in fact captitalize Wiccan Pagan and Druid. It was the editor who lowercase them, which i was pretty upset when i saw. I felt as if we were downgraded.
feel free to respond to the letter by sending an email to Opinion@seacoastonline.com. I need Pagan support to show we are out there. i always get a Christian response to my letters.

I hear you, but the difference to me is, I don't normally capitalize buddhist or hindu or christian either. To me, religious affiliations are always second place to someone's fundamental humanity. But I do dig this article. I especially like the polite reference to all the 'beautiful pagans.' Nice one! I might add that at this time of year, it's perhaps best to be not so strenuous about YOUR piety. You don't want to be the pagan equivalent of a 'church lady', do you? No one likes those people. Have fun, do what you please. It's all paradise for hedonists of all stripes.
In case you haven't noticed, celebration of Halloween has grown astronomically over the years. People bitch about Christmas overkill--hell, I've been seeing pumpkins and ghosts in stores for at least two months now! That's an excellent sign. When kids dress up like vampires and ghosts and witches, you know it's not scorn, it's not based in fear. It's big fun, and cool like Elvis. Please don't poop on that with religiosity. Just plan for an extra long night, and I'll see you out there, kids! The party has already started. Have a great one.

This would be an outstanding article...if Engelking had simply remembered to capitalize "Wiccan," "Druid," and "Pagan" the way mainstream media keeps capitalizing "xian" and "islamic."
But that's just the "grammar nazi" in me speaking.
