U.S. Backs Lawsuit Against Wayne, N.J.

Author: Andrea Alexander Source: Northjersey.com (NJ)

Title: U.S. BACKS LAWSUIT AGAINST WAYNE
Federal justice officials are backing a lawsuit by an Albanian Muslim group that claims the township discriminated against it by trying to take its property even as it sought to build a mosque in town.
The U.S. Department of Justice said the township's actions against the Paterson-based Albanian Associated Fund bore the "classic trademarks'' of discrimination. In court papers, the government said there was reason to conclude the township tried to take the property for open space to stop members of the fund from building a mosque and community center in the township.
Mayor Scott Rumana, however, said the Colfax Road property is environmentally unsuitable for development and that is why the township tried to acquire the land through eminent domain.

Should be interesting. It's amazing when these things come out- because it sets precedent for everyone else.

If they can discriminate against a mosque, then a Baptist-dominated community could do the same to a group of Catholics who want to build a church, and a Catholic-dominated community could do the same to keep a group of Baptists who want to build a church.
Besides, the Bush Justice Department (oxymoron?) needs this kind of showcase-case to show that they do not discriminate.
When we want a building, this will help us, too.

They will use the ruling, if it comes down in their favor in support of Christian mega churches in zoning decisions. They've been in favor of exempting religious organizations from local zoning rules for some time and this fits right in. Makes them look even handed, and they may be but the effect will be less local control and more rights for the far right "neo-christian" (my term) organizations. The article doesn't give enough info to judge the merits of the case maybe the Muslim group is within their rights and the town just doesn't want them there but my gut says it wouldn't matter much to the DOJ. When they, the Bush administration seem to be doing the right thing there's almost always a kicker.
Sleep well America...........
Pagans and real Christians would both do well to pray for the upcoming elections.
