Feds To N.J. Town: You Gotta Move Cats

Author: Wayne Parry, AP   Source: Google

Title: FEDS TO N.J. TOWN: YOU GOTTA MOVE CATS

Suspected by the feds of a few killings, Cape May's feral felines were all set to start new lives far from where endangered shorebirds nest.

Then howls from the cats' backers persuaded the Cape May City Council to back down on the relocation plan and risk losing millions of dollars in federal sand replenishment.

In this historic beach community, where both cats and birds are wildly popular, the debate is more than the love of fur versus feather.

Wild cats are as much a part of genteel Cape May culture as rainbow-colored Victorian bed and breakfasts, trolley tours and cocktails on the porch at sunset.

But Cape May is also one of the prime bird-watching spots in all of North America.

The Island... Feb 27th. at 8:09:55 pm EST

that Cape May (the town, not the county) is located on is only about 3.5 miles at its widest. Part of the island is a military reservation (the US Coast Guard Training Center.) To the east is the Atlantic Ocean, to the west is the Delaware Bay where it empties into the ocean.

There is not much room to move the cats. It would make more sense to try to get the birds to nest in one of the many bird and wildlife sanctuaries in NJ; if they need an aquatic habitat, then the Federally-maintained Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge (see additional link below) , about 50 miles to the north of Cape May, seems a much safer habitat - both in relation to cats and tourists - for the birds than *anywhere* in Cape May County, let alone the town of Cape May.

Something many people fail to fully comprehend in this type of situation is that feral cats are an invasive species. Meaning, they are an example of mans destruction of nature just as much as greenhouse gases or toxic oil spills.

Birds Are Endangered.... Feb 25th. at 6:21:01 pm EST

...cat's most certainly are not. I don't see the problem, here. Move the cats, cordon of the birds, and tell everyone to shut up.

Desperate times, desperate measures, and all that good stuff.

Why Should Cats Be The Only Ones To Move? Feb 25th. at 10:10:30 am EST

If the town has a neutering and spaying program, then that should continue, and more can be done to keep people away from the nesting areas during peak egg seasons as taking care of the cats alone seems rather inadequate to keep nests from being destroyed.
While cats do predate a lot, my guess is that people are a major cause of problems. Make them move out too.

You got wild "domestic" cats eating the endangered birds and the only thing that the town government is worried about is not getting their sand. I thought that the spay/neuter release would have been a good plan to let the cats slowly become the endangered one. That would be better than wholesale killing them. Max
