The Real Witches

Author: Pamela J. Principe-Golgolab   Source: New Jersey Monthly (NJ)

Title: THE REAL WITCHES

Halloween may be over, but real En Jay witches—nothing like Hollywood’s green faced, evil doers—dispelled some myths for us.

“A witch is someone who practices the craft,” Davis Aistars, owner of Mystic Spirit Metaphysical Shoppe in Montclair, told us. He and his wife, Karen, have been practicing for more than three years.

“Witches believe there is a divine force that we are part of,” Davis explained. “All is one. Each individual has a play in the force that is out there.”

I don't know why the article says we have been practicing Wicca 3 years or more. Davis has been practicing for about 7 years and I have been practicing for about 12 years.

Wicca Does Have Its "Roots" In Old Religions Nov 9th. at 3:54:55 pm EST

Shadowbear (Hillsboro, Oregon) - Email Me

Whether Celtic or Egyptian or other - it is "based" on the old religions even though it is not an old religion.

Interviewing the owner of a shop does "commercialize" the article but it was not too far out of line - I was not bothered by seeing the reference to a new magazine that might be interesting to us pagans of whatever persuasion. Certainly there was no harm in referring those interested to check for information here on Witchvox - a good source of actual information.

I have always thought that the "harm none" was in that clause to remind us that the harm will return to us and that we need to think of the personal responsibility we must take on for our actions. Spells are "harmful" if they control or specifically hurt anyone, or otherwise change their lives for the worse, evil is a moral judgement about whether there was justification for the harm. If I am defending myself or others then, perhaps my spell to kill someone is not evil, but it is "harmful". What the personal payment would be for taking a life in those circumstances is not known to me (obviously) but would probably be worth it to me in the circumstances.

What I Was Taught. Nov 9th. at 7:22:33 am EST

stalkingwolf (Bullhead City, Arizona) - Email Me

More years ago than I care to remember I learned
many truths of the craft.

The first being not only diametrically opposed to
the pauline teaching of turn the other cheek, but left out by most adherents of the Craft.

In the Rede that I was taught and that I follow there is a line that follows " and it harm none" that is very
important. It continues thusley, " [B] EXCEPT IN THY OWN DEFENSE OR THE DEFENSE OF KIN IT BE."[B/]
"Do spells exist? “Yes,” acknowledged Davis. But for good, not evil. "
define Evil.

As for the "green faced hunched backed etc." description, We today should all remember this
description with horror, as it accuratly portrays
what a young Woman subjected to trial by the
Church would look like after years of being "put to the question" and released after being found Innocent.

Yes that is correct. Being found Innocent. Yes That is correct , and with the election of Barney Obama (
rather evokes images of a purple dragon) these times could return.

For those who have doubts I would suggest that you
read Malleus Malefacarum. This was the treatise used to try Witches. Not just by the Catholic church but by the Protestants as well. It is still quoted today by the fundies.

How would you fare today against this test?
You are taken to a body of water. Your hands and feet are tied, you are taken to the deepest part of the water. Thrown in. If you float you and your
Family are killed as Witches. If you drown you are proclaimed Innocent and your family is not killed,
but probably run out of the place where they live.

WELCOME TO THE RETURN OF THE BURNING TIMES.

If the lack of anything resembling facts about Wicca were not bad enough, the blatant commercialism of this 'article' really set my teeth on edge!

The Craft is capitalized, as is Wicca.

Wicca does not go back to the Ancient Egyptians or to Celtic lore, though magic certainly does. Wiccans are not the only people who practice magic.

Wiccans do have strictures against harming others, but that doesn't mean all magical practitioners do. Harmful spells *do* exist, and you can read about them in history books, grimoires, and even the Bible.

There have been many good writers on the Craft besides Gerald Gardner - - Stewart & Janet Farrar, Doreen Valiente, Paul Huson, among others. The Frosts are a whole 'nother kettle of fish..

And it takes a lot more than just a 'personal decision' to become a Witch.
